Time 40m

Yield 8-10 serving(s)

Number Of Ingredients 7

3 cups flour
3 tablespoons baking powder
1 teaspoon salt
1 cup sugar
1 cup milk
1 egg
1/2 cup margarine or 1/2 cup shortening

Steps:

  • Mix all the dry ingredients together.
  • Cut the margarine or shortening into the dry ingredients until the mixture is crumbly.
  • Add the milk and egg and stir until well combined.
  • Shape pieces of dough into 5-6 inch circles.
  • They should be about 1/2 an inch thick.
  • You then fry them in oil that comes atleast halfway up the side of the johnny bread.
  • It should be a low to medium flame; too high and the outside will burn and the inside will still be doughy.
  • They're done when they're golden brown on both sides.
  • Depending on their thickness, it could take anywhere from 3-5 minutes per side.
  • Drain on paper towels when done.
  • Enjoy!

Tips:

  • Choosing the right flour is essential for achieving the perfect texture in Johnny bread. All-purpose flour is commonly used, but you can also experiment with different flours like whole wheat flour or bread flour to add more flavor and nutritional value.
  • To achieve a crispy crust and a fluffy interior, it's important to ensure the baking powder and baking soda are fresh and active. Old or inactive leavening agents can result in a dense and flat bread.
  • Mixing the dough correctly is crucial. Over-mixing can lead to a tough and chewy texture, so mix just until the ingredients are well combined to maintain a light and airy texture.
  • Feel free to customize your Johnny bread by adding various mix-ins or toppings. Consider incorporating grated cheese, herbs, diced vegetables, or cooked meat to create unique flavor combinations that suit your preferences.
  • Cooking Johnny bread on a lightly greased baking sheet or skillet helps achieve a golden-brown crust. You can also brush the top of the bread with melted butter or milk before baking for an extra glossy and crispy finish.

Conclusion:

Exploring the world of Johnny bread recipes can lead to delightful culinary experiences, whether you prefer a simple and classic approach or enjoy experimenting with different flavors and textures. With its versatility, affordability, and ease of preparation, Johnny bread is a beloved staple in many cultures, offering a satisfying and comforting addition to any meal.
