I know the title sounds a little pretentious, but these seriously are amazing. I've had many self-proclaimed Brussels sprout haters do a complete u-turn with this recipe. The best part is that it is so quick and just uses the microwave, so for big dinners where the oven is in use, this makes a great side!

Time 20m

Yield 6-8 serving(s)

Number Of Ingredients 5

1 lb Brussels sprout
2 large red apples
1 teaspoon ground nutmeg
1/8 cup brown sugar
1/3 cup melted butter

Steps:

  • Clean and halve the Brussels sprouts. Put them in a microwave safe dish and add a tablespoon or so of water. Cover and microwave on high for about five minutes. They should NOT be fully cooked.
  • Core, then roughly chop the apples, leaving skin on.
  • Mix the butter, sugar and nutmeg.
  • Add the apples to the sprouts and cover with butter mixture. Return to microwave and microwave for 4-5 minutes until sprouts are cooked.
  • Cooking time will vary depending on your microwave.
  • Serve immediately. Great as leftovers too!

Tips

  • Choose the right Brussels sprouts: Look for firm, deep green sprouts with no signs of wilting or yellowing.
  • Trim and halve the Brussels sprouts: Cut off the stem end and halve the sprouts lengthwise. This will help them cook evenly.
  • Season generously: Brussels sprouts love salt and pepper. Season them well before cooking.
  • Don't overcrowd the pan: When roasting or sautéing Brussels sprouts, make sure to give them enough space so they can brown evenly. Otherwise, they will steam instead of roast.
  • Roast at high heat: Roasting Brussels sprouts at high heat will help them caramelize and develop a delicious crispy exterior.
  • Don't overcook: Brussels sprouts are best when they are cooked just until tender. Overcooking will make them mushy.
  • Add some crunch: If you like, you can add some crunch to your Brussels sprouts by adding chopped nuts, seeds, or breadcrumbs.

Conclusion

Brussels sprouts are a delicious and versatile vegetable that can be enjoyed in many different ways. With their unique flavor and texture, they are a great addition to any meal. Whether you roast them, sauté them, or grill them, Brussels sprouts are sure to please. So next time you're looking for a healthy and flavorful side dish, give Brussels sprouts a try.
