Mom gave me the original recipe which is kind of a cross between a coffee cake and dessert bar, using a strawberry-rhubarb combination, but I changed it to one with cherry, which I think gives it a richer flavor.

4 cups chopped rhubarb
2 tablespoons lemon juice
1 cup white sugar
⅓ cup cornstarch
1 (20 ounce) can cherry pie filling
3 cups all-purpose flour
1 cup white sugar
1 teaspoon baking powder

½ teaspoon salt
1 cup cold butter, cubed
1 cup buttermilk
2 eggs, lightly beaten
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
