Time 55m

Yield 15 biscuits

Number Of Ingredients 14

2 cups all-purpose flour
1 tablespoon baking powder
1/4 teaspoon baking soda
1 teaspoon salt
1/2 cup sugar
1 teaspoon grated orange rind
1/3 cup shortening
1 egg, beaten
3/4 cup buttermilk
1/2 cup fresh blueberries, rinsed and drained
3 tablespoons butter or 3 tablespoons margarine, melted
3 tablespoons sugar
1/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1/8 teaspoon ground nutmeg

Steps:

  • Combine first 6 ingredients in a medium bowl; cut in shortening with a pastry blender until mixture resembles coarse meal.
  • Combine egg and buttermilk; add to flour mixture, stirring just until dry ingredients are moistened.
  • Stir in blueberries.
  • Turn dough out onto a heavily floured surface, and knead 4 or 5 times.
  • Roll dough to 1/2-inch thickness; cut with a 2 1/2-inch biscuit cutter.
  • Place on lightly greased baking sheets.
  • Bake at 400 degrees for 15 minutes or until golden brown.
  • Combine butter and remaining ingredients, stirring well; brush on warm biscuits.

Tips:

  • Use fresh blueberries: Fresh blueberries will give your biscuits the best flavor and texture. If you don't have fresh blueberries, you can use frozen blueberries, but be sure to thaw them before using.
  • Don't overmix the dough: Overmixing the dough will make the biscuits tough. Mix the ingredients just until they come together.
  • Chill the dough before baking: Chilling the dough before baking will help the biscuits rise and have a more tender texture.
  • Bake the biscuits in a hot oven: The biscuits should be baked in a hot oven (450°F) so that they rise quickly and have a crispy exterior.
  • Serve the biscuits warm: Blueberry buttermilk biscuits are best served warm, out of the oven. You can add butter, honey, or jam to make them even more delicious.

Conclusion:

Blueberry buttermilk biscuits are a delicious and easy-to-make breakfast or snack. They are perfect for any occasion, from a casual brunch to a holiday gathering. With their sweet and tangy flavor, these biscuits are sure to be a hit with everyone who tries them. So next time you're looking for a delicious and satisfying treat, give blueberry buttermilk biscuits a try.
