BUTTER BALL COOKIES

Time 35m

Number Of Ingredients 9

1 c powdered sugar
2 c flour
1/2 tsp baking soda
1 tsp cream of tartar
1 c chopped nutmeats
1 c butter, room temperature
1 egg
1/2 tsp salt
1 tsp vanilla extract

Steps:

  • 1. Mix like pie crust; add egg, salt, vanilla.
  • 2. Stir nutmeats into dough or top each with a half of a pecan.
  • 3. Roll into walnut-size balls. Flatten very slightly.
  • 4. Bake at 350 degrees for 12-15 minutes. Cool. Roll in powdered sugar. Store in airtight container.

Tips:

  • Use softened butter: Softened butter is easier to cream with sugar, resulting in a smoother batter. If you forget to take the butter out of the fridge ahead of time, you can soften it quickly by placing it in the microwave for a few seconds at a time, or by grating it with a cheese grater.
  • Cream the butter and sugar together until light and fluffy: This will help to incorporate air into the batter, resulting in a lighter and more tender cookie. Creaming the butter and sugar together also helps to dissolve the sugar, preventing it from crystallizing and making the cookies grainy.
  • Add the eggs one at a time, beating well after each addition: This will help to prevent the eggs from curdling. If you add the eggs all at once, they may not mix in evenly and could cause the batter to curdle.
  • Gradually add the flour, mixing until just combined: Overmixing the batter can result in tough cookies. Once the flour is just combined, stop mixing and proceed to the next step.
  • Chill the dough for at least 30 minutes before baking: Chilling the dough helps to firm it up, making it easier to handle and preventing it from spreading too much in the oven. Chilling the dough also helps to develop the flavor of the cookies.
  • Bake the cookies until they are just set around the edges and still slightly soft in the center: Overbaking will result in dry and crumbly cookies. To check if the cookies are done, insert a toothpick into the center of a cookie. If the toothpick comes out clean, the cookies are done. If the toothpick comes out with wet batter on it, the cookies need to bake for a few more minutes.

Conclusion:

Butterball cookies are a classic holiday cookie that are easy to make and always a hit with family and friends. With a few simple tips, you can make sure your butterball cookies turn out perfect every time.
