Time 35m

Yield 4 servings

Number Of Ingredients 12

1 pound ground turkey
1 tablespoon jerk seasoning, plus more for sprinkling
1 small green apple, peeled and grated
1/2 cup finely chopped scallions
1/4 cup panko (Japanese breadcrumbs)
Kosher salt and freshly ground pepper
1/4 cup mayonnaise, plus more for brushing
1/4 cup mango chutney, roughly chopped
3 cups shredded green cabbage
1 carrot, shredded
Canola oil, for the grill
4 hamburger buns or challah rolls, split

Steps:

  • Preheat a grill or grill pan to medium high. Mix the turkey, jerk seasoning, apple, 1/4 cup scallions and the panko in a bowl; season with salt and pepper. Form into four 1-inch-thick patties and make a small indentation in the middle of each with your thumb to prevent it from puffing up on the grill. Refrigerate.
  • Whisk the mayonnaise and chutney in a large bowl. Add the cabbage, carrot and the remaining 1/4 cup scallions, season with salt and pepper and toss to coat.
  • Brush the grill with canola oil. Grill the turkey patties until browned and cooked through, 4 to 5 minutes per side.
  • Brush the cut sides of the buns with mayonnaise and sprinkle with jerk seasoning; toast on the grill, about 30 seconds. Serve the burgers and slaw on the buns.

MANGO SLAW

Mango Slaw image

There is absolutely nothing new about coleslaw, but there is something slightly intriguing about coleslaw with mangos. Often, when we think of coleslaw, we think of it as a side for fish and chips, barbecue, or heavy, mayonnaise-drenched cabbage. But just think about the cool, crunchy sweetness of the cabbage, carrots and mango, paired with the spicy kick of jerk chicken. What's a better combination? You also don't have to serve it as a side: It can be tucked into a sandwich or wrap. One of the best things about this recipe is that all the ingredients are readily available, and there are many shortcuts you can take, like using a bagged mix. Who wants to ruin their knuckles on a box grater, or break out the food processor?

Time 5m

Yield 3 cups

Number Of Ingredients 7

1 (8-ounce) bag coleslaw (about 3 cups)
2 large, slightly firm mangoes (about 1 3/4 pounds), peeled, pitted and thinly sliced (about 2 cups)
1/2 cup chopped fresh cilantro
2 tablespoons freshly squeezed lime juice
1 tablespoon honey or agave syrup
1/4 teaspoon celery salt
1/4 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper

Steps:

  • In a large bowl, combine all ingredients. Toss with tongs or a fork to combine.
  • Refrigerate for at least 1 hour. Serve cold.

Tips:

  • Use fresh ingredients whenever possible. This will give your burgers and mango slaw the best flavor.
  • Don't overcook the burgers. The ideal internal temperature for a burger is 160 degrees Fahrenheit. Overcooking will make the burgers dry and tough.
  • Toast the buns before serving. This will give them a nice crispy texture.
  • Use a variety of toppings. This will make your burgers more flavorful and interesting. Some good options include cheese, bacon, avocado, lettuce, tomato, and onion.
  • Make the mango slaw ahead of time. This will give the flavors time to meld together.
  • Serve the burgers with your favorite dipping sauce. Some good options include ketchup, mustard, mayonnaise, barbecue sauce, and ranch dressing.

Conclusion:

These Caribbean burgers with mango slaw are a delicious and easy-to-make meal that is perfect for any occasion. The burgers are juicy and flavorful, and the mango slaw is a refreshing and tangy complement. Whether you're grilling them up for a backyard barbecue or serving them at a party, these burgers are sure to be a hit.
