Time 55m

Yield 1/2 cup, 10 serving(s)

Number Of Ingredients 10

2 1/2 cups corn flakes, crushed
1/2 cup butter, melted
4 1/2 cups shredded cabbage
1/4 cup chopped onion
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/4 teaspoon pepper
1 (10 3/4 ounce) can cream of mushroom soup
1 cup milk
1/2 cup mayonnaise (no substitutions)
2 cups shredded cheddar cheese

Steps:

  • Preheat oven to 350; grease a 13x9 pan, set aside.
  • Toss cornflakes & butter; sprinkle half into pan.
  • Layer cabbage, onion, salt & pepper.
  • In a medium mixing bowl, combine soup and mayonnaise; spoon over other stuff, sprinkle with cheese and remaining cornflake mixture.
  • Bake, uncovered for 45-50 minutes (golden brown).

Tips:

  • Use fresh cabbage. Fresh cabbage has a more vibrant flavor and texture than wilted or old cabbage.
  • Shred the cabbage thinly. This will help it cook evenly and absorb the flavors of the other ingredients.
  • Use a sharp knife to chop the onion and celery. This will help prevent them from becoming too mushy when they cook.
  • Don't overcook the cabbage. Cabbage should be cooked until it is tender, but still has a slight crunch to it.
  • Use a good quality cheddar cheese. A sharp cheddar cheese will give the casserole a more robust flavor.
  • Season the casserole to taste. Add salt, pepper, and other seasonings to taste.
  • Serve the casserole hot. Cheddar cabbage casserole is best served hot, straight out of the oven.

Conclusion:

Cheddar cabbage casserole is a delicious and easy-to-make side dish that is perfect for any occasion. It is a great way to use up leftover cabbage, and it is also a budget-friendly dish. This casserole is sure to be a hit with your family and friends.
