Categories     appetizer

Time 1h

Yield 6 to 8 servings

Number Of Ingredients 11

1 tablespoon extra-virgin olive oil
1 large Vidalia onion, very thinly sliced
8 ounces cream cheese, at room temperature
1/2 cup mayonnaise
1/4 cup sour cream
1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
1/2 teaspoon garlic salt
1/2 teaspoon onion powder
Freshly ground pepper
1 scallion (green part only), thinly sliced, plus more for topping
Vegetables (roasted and raw), for serving

Steps:

  • Heat the olive oil in a medium skillet over medium-high heat. Add the onion and saute until beginning to brown, 5 to 7 minutes. Stir in 1/4 cup water and scrape up any browned bits from the bottom of the pan. Turn the heat to low and cook until the onion is golden brown, 30 to 35 minutes, stirring occasionally. If the pan ever looks too dry, add a tablespoon of water. Let cool completely.
  • Combine the cream cheese, mayonnaise, sour cream, Worcestershire sauce, garlic salt, onion powder and 1/2 teaspoon pepper in a medium bowl and beat with a mixer until smooth. Stir in the caramelized onion and the scallion. Chill until serving time. Top with more scallions and serve with vegetables for dipping.

VIDALIA® ONION DIP

Vidalia® Onion Dip image

A cheesy dip for the onion lover in all of us. I serve it with crackers but you can also use breadsticks. Be careful about over-baking as the cheese will harden and be difficult to dip crackers in.

Provided by Miss Annie

Categories     Cheese

Time 40m

Yield 4 Cups

Number Of Ingredients 6

3 large vidalia onions or 3 large other sweet onions, coarsely chopped
2 tablespoons unsalted butter or 2 tablespoons margarine, melted
2 cups cheddar cheese, shredded (8 oz.)
1 cup mayonnaise
1/2 teaspoon hot sauce
1 -2 garlic clove, minced

Steps:

  • Cook onion in butter in a large skillet over medium-high heat, stirring constantly, until tender.
  • Combine onion, cheese, mayonnaise, hot sauce, and garlic; stir well.
  • Pour into a lightly buttered 1 1/2 quart casserole.
  • Bake, uncovered, at 375ºF for 20-25 minutes or until bubbly and golden.
  • Serve dip with tortilla chips or assorted crackers.

Tips:

  • Choose the right onions: Vidalia onions are the best choice for this dip, as they are sweet and mild. However, you can use other types of onions if you prefer.
  • Caramelize the onions: Caramelizing the onions brings out their natural sweetness and flavor. Be sure to cook them over low heat until they are golden brown.
  • Use a good quality cheese: The type of cheese you use will have a big impact on the flavor of the dip. Use a sharp cheddar cheese for a bold flavor, or a milder cheese like Monterey Jack for a more subtle flavor.
  • Don't overcook the dip: The dip should be cooked until it is melted and bubbly, but be careful not to overcook it, or the cheese will become tough.
  • Serve the dip immediately: The dip is best served immediately, while it is still hot and bubbly. You can garnish it with chopped green onions, chives, or bacon bits.

Conclusion:

Cheesy Vidalia onion dip is a delicious and easy-to-make appetizer that is perfect for any occasion. It is made with caramelized onions, cheese, and sour cream, and can be served with chips, vegetables, or crackers. This dip is sure to be a hit at your next party or gathering.
