Time 10m

Number Of Ingredients 7

5 oz grape tomatoes, chopped in half (about 1/2 of a dry pint container)
1/4 c fresh basil, chopped
8 oz "cherry size" mozzarella, chopped in fourths
1 medium cucumber, peeled, seeded, and diced
1 Tbsp olive oil, extra virgin
2 Tbsp balsamic vinegar
salt and pepper, to taste

Steps:

  • 1. Prep ingredients.
  • 2. Toss ingredients in a large bowl.
  • 3. Keep refrigerated until ready to serve. Serve with crackers or toasted, crusty French bread.

Tips:

  • Use ripe, flavorful tomatoes: This is the star of the show, so make sure you choose tomatoes that are at their peak of ripeness. Look for tomatoes that are a deep red color, feel heavy for their size, and have a sweet, juicy aroma.
  • Slice the tomatoes evenly: This will help them cook evenly and make the salad more visually appealing. Use a sharp knife to slice the tomatoes into 1/4-inch thick rounds.
  • Don't skimp on the mozzarella: Mozzarella is the other key ingredient in caprese salad, so be generous with it. Use fresh, high-quality mozzarella and slice it into 1/4-inch thick rounds as well.
  • Use fresh basil: Basil is what really makes caprese salad special. Use fresh, fragrant basil leaves, and tear them into small pieces. You can also use other herbs, such as oregano or thyme, if you like.
  • Drizzle with olive oil: Olive oil adds a delicious richness to caprese salad. Drizzle a little bit of extra virgin olive oil over the tomatoes, mozzarella, and basil.
  • Season with salt and pepper: Season the salad with salt and pepper to taste. You can also add a pinch of garlic powder or red pepper flakes, if you like.
  • Serve immediately: Caprese salad is best served immediately, while the tomatoes and mozzarella are still fresh. You can make it ahead of time, but wait to add the basil until just before serving.

Conclusion:

Caprese salad is a classic Italian dish that is perfect for any occasion. It's simple to make, but it's always a crowd-pleaser. The combination of ripe tomatoes, fresh mozzarella, and fragrant basil is simply irresistible. So next time you're looking for a light and refreshing salad, give caprese salad a try. You won't be disappointed!
