Number Of Ingredients 7

1 onion, chopped
2 celery stalks, sliced
2 carrots, sliced
4 c chicken broth, low salt
2 c ham, cubed
1 c peas, frozen
2 Tbsp cornstarch

Steps:

  • 1. In a dutch oven, combine onion, celery, carrots, broth, ham and seasonings then cover and cook over med-high heat for 20 minutes or until carrots are almost tender, then stir in the peas.
  • 2. Mix 1/2 cup water and then corn starch and add to the stew.
  • 3. Stir constantly until stew thickens... and if desired garnish with celery

Tips:

  • Choose the right ham. A bone-in ham will give your stew a richer flavor than a boneless ham. If you're using a boneless ham, be sure to add a ham bone or smoked ham hock to the pot for extra flavor.
  • Use a variety of vegetables. The more vegetables you add to your stew, the more flavorful it will be. Some good options include potatoes, carrots, celery, onions, and peas.
  • Don't overcook the vegetables. You want them to be tender, but not mushy. Overcooked vegetables will make your stew bland.
  • Season the stew to taste. Add salt, pepper, and other spices to taste. You can also add a bay leaf or two for extra flavor.
  • Let the stew simmer for a while. The longer you simmer the stew, the more flavorful it will be. Simmer it for at least 30 minutes, or longer if you have time.
  • Serve the stew with crusty bread or biscuits. This will help to soak up the delicious broth.

Conclusion:

Ham stew is a hearty and flavorful dish that is perfect for a cold winter day. It's also very easy to make, and it's a great way to use up leftover ham. So next time you have some leftover ham, don't just throw it away. Make a pot of ham stew instead!
