Time 40m

Yield 12 serving(s)

Number Of Ingredients 9

2 cups all-purpose flour
4 tablespoons sugar, divided
2 1/2 teaspoons baking powder
1/2 teaspoon salt
5 tablespoons cold butter
2/3 cup chopped dates
2 eggs, lightly beaten
1/3 cup milk
1/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon

Steps:

  • In a bowl, combine the flour, 2 tablespoons sugar, baking powder and salt. Cut in butter until the mixture resembles fine crumbs. Stir in dates. Combine eggs and milk; stir into crumb mixture just until blended (dough will be soft).
  • Turn onto a lightly floured surface. With lightly floured hands, gently knead dough 10 times. Pat into a 9-in. x 6-in. rectangle. Using a floured knife, cut into six 3-in. squares; cut each square diagonally in half.
  • Place on a greased baking sheet. Combine the cinnamon and remaining sugar; sprinkle over scones. Bake at 400 degrees F for 12-14 minutes or until lightly browned. Remove to a wire rack.

Tips:

  • For the perfect crumbly texture, use cold butter and work it into the flour mixture quickly until it resembles coarse crumbs. Avoid overworking the dough, as this will result in tough scones.
  • Use a sharp knife or pastry cutter to cut the butter into the flour mixture. This will help create even-sized pieces of butter, which will contribute to the scones' flaky texture.
  • Don't overmix the dough once you've added the wet ingredients. Overmixing will result in dense, tough scones.
  • For a sweeter scone, add an extra 1/4 cup of sugar to the dough.
  • If you don't have buttermilk, you can make your own by adding 1 tablespoon of lemon juice or vinegar to 1 cup of regular milk. Let it sit for 5 minutes before using.
  • To ensure even baking, place the scones on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper.
  • For a crispy exterior, brush the tops of the scones with milk before baking.
  • To prevent the scones from drying out, store them in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 3 days, or freeze them for up to 2 months.

Conclusion:

These cinnamon date scones are a delicious and easy-to-make treat that are perfect for any occasion. With their warm, spicy flavor and tender, flaky texture, they're sure to be a hit with everyone who tries them. So next time you're looking for a special breakfast or snack, give these scones a try. You won't be disappointed!
