Time 2h30m

Number Of Ingredients 10

4 Cube Steaks
1 tsp Kosher Salt (3/4 tsp table salt)
1/2 tsp Pepper
1/4 cup All Purpose Flour
1 tsp Garlic Powder
1/2 tsp Onion Powder
3 Tbsp Unsalted Butter
1 Onion (thickly sliced)
2 Tbsp Olive Oil
2 cups Beef Broth (low sodium)

Steps:

  • Sprinkle both sides of the cube steaks with the salt and pepper. Set aside.
  • On a plate, mix together the flour, garlic powder and onion powder.
  • Heat a 12" skillet over medium high heat. When hot, add the butter and onion. Cook, stirring occasionally, until softened. Remove to a bowl.
  • While the onion is cooking, dredge the cube steaks in the flour (both sides) and shake off the excess. Set aside.
  • After cooking the onion, add the olive oil to the skillet. When hot, add the cube steaks. Cook about 4 minutes on each side.
  • Add the beef broth, there should be just enough to cover the cube steaks. Then bring to a simmer, gently scraping up any browned bits under the cube steaks. Reduce heat to low and cover the skillet most of the way, leaving just a small gap for steam to escape.
  • Cook for 1 hour, then add the onions to the skillet. Cook 1 more hour, or until the cube steaks are tender.

COUNTRY FRIED STEAKS WITH SWEET ONION GRAVY

Country Fried Steaks with Sweet Onion Gravy image

A simple recipe, but dressed up with a different, more flavorful, topping.

Provided by TerryWilson

Categories     Meat and Poultry Recipes     Beef     Steaks

Time 1h15m

Yield 4

Number Of Ingredients 13

1 cup all-purpose flour
2 tablespoons cornstarch
1 ¼ teaspoons onion powder
1 ¼ teaspoons garlic powder
½ teaspoon salt
½ teaspoon ground black pepper
¼ teaspoon cayenne pepper
4 (4 ounce) beef cube steaks
2 tablespoons unsalted butter
2 tablespoons olive oil
3 very large sweet onions (such as Vidalia®), thinly sliced
2 cups beef stock
1 cup milk

Steps:

  • In a shallow bowl, stir together the flour, cornstarch, onion powder, garlic powder, salt, black pepper, and cayenne pepper until thoroughly mixed. Remove 1/3 cup of the flour mixture, and set aside. Gently press the cube steaks into the remaining flour mixture in the bowl until well coated on both sides.
  • Heat butter and olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat until the foam subsides on the butter. Gently pan-fry the steaks until the coating is browned, about 4 minutes per side. Turn only once. Remove the steaks to a platter.
  • Spread the onions out into the skillet with the remaining oil and butter, and cook over medium heat until the onions are translucent, 5 to 7 minutes, stirring often. Sprinkle the reserved flour mixture over the onions; cook and stir for 1 more minute, then pour in the beef stock and milk. Bring the mixture to a boil, stirring constantly until the gravy is thickened. Scrape the pan well to dissolve any flavor bits left in the bottom. Return the browned steaks to the gravy mixture, then push them down into the gravy. Cover the skillet, reduce heat to low, and simmer until the steaks are very tender, about 45 minutes, stirring occasionally.

Tips:

  • Choose the right cut of meat: Cube steak is a good choice because it is a thin, tender cut of meat that is easy to cook. You can also use other cuts of steak, such as round steak or flank steak, but they will need to be cooked for a longer period of time.
  • Tenderize the meat: Pounding the meat with a meat mallet helps to break down the fibers and make it more tender. You can also marinate the meat in a mixture of olive oil, garlic, and herbs for several hours before cooking.
  • Cook the meat over medium heat: Cooking the meat over medium heat helps to prevent it from becoming tough. If you cook the meat over high heat, it will brown quickly on the outside but remain raw on the inside.
  • Don't overcook the meat: Overcooked meat is tough and dry. Cook the meat until it is just cooked through, or to your desired level of doneness.
  • Make a flavorful gravy: The gravy is an important part of this dish. Be sure to use a good quality beef broth and add some flavorful ingredients, such as onions, garlic, and herbs.

Conclusion:

Cube steak with onion gravy is a classic comfort food that is easy to make and delicious. By following these tips, you can make a perfect cube steak dinner that your family and friends will love.
