DAGWOOD BUMSTEAD

Dagwood Bumstead image

Named after Dagwood Bumstead, a character in the "Blondie" comic strip, this very tall sandwich is piled high with meats, cheeses, condiments, and vegetables for a dramatic presentation. To keep layers from falling over, skewer them on a spindle or with a bamboo skewer. This when broken down actually makes 5 separate sandwiches but the presentation is something else, especially for a football game party! From a pamphlet at my local deli.

TUNA BUMSTEAD (SANDWICH)

Tuna Bumstead (Sandwich) image

This is the 'famous' toasted tuna sandwich that was served in my Catholic school cafeteria. Who knows why they called them tuna bumsteads, but they did.. Use Miracle Whip for the real-deal, but I know a lot of folks don't like it so use mayo if you're, ahem, 'one of them'.. lol..

TUNA BUMSTEADS

I remember these from my junior high school cafeteria, every Friday without fail! I still hate tuna but now I can at least make up for that with a substitution!

Time 35m

Yield 8 serving(s)

Number Of Ingredients 9

1 (16 ounce) can tuna fish (or chicken or deviled ham)
1/2 lb cubed cheese, american or cheddar
3 hard-boiled eggs, chopped
2 tablespoons chopped green peppers
2 tablespoons chopped onions
2 tablespoons chopped olives
2 tablespoons sweet pickle relish
1/2 cup mayonnaise
8 hot dog buns

Steps:

  • Mix all together but the buns.
  • Split buns half way thru and fill evenly with mixture.
  • Wrap each in foil.
  • Bake at 325 for 20 minutes.

Tips:

  • Mise en place: Before starting to cook, ensure all ingredients and equipment are ready. This will help you stay organized and prevent scrambling during the cooking process.
  • Follow the recipe: While experimenting in the kitchen is encouraged, it's essential to follow the recipe accurately, especially when baking. Precise measurements and techniques are crucial for successful results.
  • Use fresh ingredients: Whenever possible, opt for fresh ingredients as they impart better flavor and nutritional value to your dishes.
  • Don't overcrowd the pan: When cooking meat or vegetables in a pan, avoid overcrowding as this prevents even cooking and can result in soggy or undercooked food.
  • Season to taste: While recipes provide a suggested amount of seasoning, it's always a good idea to taste the dish and adjust seasonings according to your preference.
  • Don't overmix: Overmixing batters and doughs can lead to tough, dense results. Mix only until the ingredients are well combined.
  • Rest before serving: Allow meat to rest for a few minutes before slicing and serving. This helps the juices redistribute, resulting in more tender and flavorful meat.

Conclusion:

Cooking delicious and satisfying meals at home doesn't have to be complicated. With careful planning, the right ingredients, and a bit of practice, you can create mouthwatering dishes that will impress your family and friends. Remember, cooking is an art and a skill that improves with practice. So, keep experimenting, learning, and enjoying the journey of creating unforgettable culinary experiences in your own kitchen.
