CROCK POT HAM BONE AND BEANS

Crock Pot Ham Bone and Beans image

Many variations to Ham Bone (or Hocks) and beans but this is pretty much how I remember it from my childhood. I find by not soaking the beans they have better texture and flavor.I use Great Northern Beans as my favorite choice of bean for this recipe. I have used 15 bean mix with good results just omit the ham flavor packet.

SLOW COOKER HAM AND BEAN SOUP

Time 8h23m

Yield 8

Number Of Ingredients 12

1 (8 ounce) package 15-bean soup mix
1 ham bone
3 cups cubed fully cooked ham
2 cups chicken broth
2 cups water
1 onion, chopped
3 carrots, chopped
1 (15.5 ounce) can great Northern beans, drained and rinsed
2 cloves garlic, finely chopped
1 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper
½ teaspoon salt
1 bay leaf

Steps:

  • Place 15-bean soup mix in a large bowl and cover with several inches of cool water; soak in refrigerator 8 hours to overnight. Drain and rinse.
  • Place 15-bean soup mix, ham bone, cooked ham, chicken broth, water, onion, carrots, great Northern beans, garlic, black pepper, salt, and bay leaf in a slow cooker; stir to combine. Cook on Low for 8 to 10 hours.

Nutrition Facts : Calories 304.6 calories, Carbohydrate 32 g, Cholesterol 29.6 mg, Fat 10.2 g, Fiber 10.9 g, Protein 20.5 g, SaturatedFat 3.4 g, Sodium 1114.3 mg, Sugar 2.9 g

Tips:

  • Choose the right ham: A bone-in ham will give your soup a richer flavor, but a boneless ham will be easier to work with. Either type of ham will work fine in this recipe.
  • Soak the beans overnight: This will help to reduce the cooking time and make the beans more tender. If you don't have time to soak the beans overnight, you can quick-soak them by boiling them for 1 minute, then removing them from the heat and letting them sit for 1 hour.
  • Use a variety of vegetables: This will add flavor and nutrition to your soup. Some good options include carrots, celery, onions, potatoes, and corn.
  • Season the soup to taste: Add salt, pepper, and other seasonings to taste. You can also add a bay leaf or two for extra flavor.
  • Serve the soup with your favorite toppings: Some popular options include bread, crackers, cheese, and sour cream.

Conclusion:

Crock Pot Ham and Beans is a classic comfort food that is easy to make and always a hit. This recipe is a great way to use up leftover ham, and it's also a budget-friendly meal. With just a few simple ingredients, you can have a delicious and hearty soup that the whole family will enjoy. So next time you're looking for an easy and delicious meal, give this recipe a try.
