Categories     main-dish

Time 50m

Yield 4 servings

Number Of Ingredients 11

8 ounces mild Italian sausage, casings removed
1/2 medium red onion, halved and sliced 1/4 inch thick
1 cup jarred pizza sauce
3 cloves garlic, grated
2 sprigs thyme, leaves only
1 long loaf French bread or baguette (about 22 inches long), halved crosswise and cut horizontally
2 cups shredded mozzarella
1/2 green bell pepper, sliced into 1/4-inch-thick strips
1/2 red bell pepper, sliced into 1/4-inch-thick strips
2 tablespoons grated Parmesan
Crushed red pepper flakes and granulated garlic, for serving

Steps:

  • Preheat the oven to 375 degrees F with one rack positioned at the bottom of the oven and another at the top.
  • Cook the sausage in a medium skillet over medium-high heat, breaking up any clumps with a wooden spoon, until some of the fat has rendered and the sausage is brown, 6 to 8 minutes. Add the onions and cook, stirring occasionally, until slightly softened, about 2 minutes.
  • Meanwhile, add the pizza sauce, garlic and thyme to a small saucepan. Heat over medium heat to let the flavors infuse while the sausage and onions cook.
  • Line a rimmed baking sheet with parchment and arrange the bread on top, cut-side up. Spread the tops evenly with the pizza sauce, then sprinkle with the mozzarella. Divide the sausage mixture among the bread pieces, then top off with the green and red bell peppers and Parmesan.
  • Bake on the bottom rack of the oven until the bread is crisp and the cheese is melted, about 10 minutes. Increase the oven temperature to 450 degrees F and move the baking sheet to the top rack. Continue to bake until the cheese is bubbling and the peppers are browned in spots, about 7 minutes.
  • Serve immediately with crushed red pepper flakes and granulated garlic on the side.

1-ounce dried porcini mushrooms
1 pound cremini or white button mushrooms, stems removed
1/4 cup canola oil
Salt and freshly ground black pepper
Whole head roasted garlic, pulp removed
1/4 cup toasted walnuts
1/4 cup loosely packed fresh flat-leaf parsley
2 teaspoons fresh thyme leaves
3/4 cup extra-virgin olive oil
1/4 cup plus 2 tablespoons grated Pecorino Romano cheese
1 loaf French bread, about 24 inches long, sliced in 1/2 lengthwise

  • Remove the porcinis from the soaking liquid and place in the bowl of a food processor with a few tablespoons of the soaking liquid. Add cremini mushrooms, garlic pulp, walnuts, parsley and thyme in a food processor and process until finely chopped. With the motor running, slowly add 1/2 cup of the olive oil and process until smooth. Add 1/4 cup of the Romano cheese and pulse a few times to incorporate. Season with salt and pepper.
  • Brush the bread on the cut side with the remaining 1/4 cup of olive oil and season with salt and pepper. Evenly spread the pesto over the cut side of each half of bread. Top the pesto with the fontina cheese, return to the grill, cheese side up, close the cover of the grill and cook until the cheese has melted, about 2 minutes. FRENCH BREAD PIZZA

BEAUTY AND THE BEAST-INSPIRED FRENCH BREAD PIZZA RECIPE BY TASTY

Beauty And The Beast-Inspired French Bread Pizza Recipe by Tasty image

The Tasty dining room proudly presents a pizza that will have you feeling like the guest of honor. To make this fairytale-inspired pizza, cut a loaf of French bread in half and top it with a French onion soup-inspired sauce, Fontina and Gruyére cheeses, and caramelized onions. Then, shape an edible enchanted rose out of salami and parsley to give this dish the happily-ever-after it deserves.

Provided by Betsy Carter

Categories     Dinner

Time 2h55m

Yield 2 french bread pizzas

Number Of Ingredients 15

½ stick unsalted butter
4 medium sweet onions, thinly sliced with the grain
1 ¼ teaspoons kosher salt
2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
2 tablespoons sherry wine
1 cup low sodium beef broth
3 sprigs fresh thyme, leaves only
1 dried bay leaf
½ teaspoon freshly ground black pepper, plus more to taste
1 loaf french bread, cut in half
1 tablespoon olive oil
6 oz shredded fontina cheese
6 oz shredded gruyère cheese
14 oz salami, thinly sliced
2 sprigs fresh parsley, tough stems trimmed

Steps:

  • In a large, heavy-bottomed pot, melt the butter over medium heat. Add the onions and season with the salt. Cook for about 1 hour and 45 minutes, stirring occasionally, until golden brown. Around the last 20 minutes of cooking, the onions will begin to caramelize, so watch carefully to ensure they don't burn. Remove 3 tablespoons of onions from the pot and set aside.
  • Add the flour to the pot and stir to coat the remaining onions. Cook until the flour is lightly browned, 1-2 minutes. Increase the heat to medium-high and deglaze with the sherry, scraping the bottom of the pot to release any browned bits.
  • Add the beef broth, thyme, bay leaf, and pepper and stir to combine. Simmer for 8-10 minutes, until the broth has reduced by about half. Remove the bay leaf.
  • Transfer the soup to a liquid measuring cup or tall, narrow glass and use an immersion blender on medium-high speed to blend until completely smooth, about 1 minute.
  • Preheat the oven to 450°F (230°C).
  • Set the French bread halves, cut-side up, on a baking sheet and drizzle with the olive oil. Toast in the oven for 5 minutes, until just beginning to brown on the top and sides.
  • Remove the French bread from the oven and top each half with the blended onion soup, the Fontina and Gruyère cheeses, and the reserved caramelized onions, dividing evenly.
  • Return the pizzas to the oven for 8-10 minutes, until the cheese is melted and bubbling. Turn the broiler on high and broil for 1-2 minutes, until the cheese is golden brown.
  • While the pizzas are baking, make the salami roses: Using a glass with a 2-inch-wide opening, layer 12-14 thinly sliced salami rounds around the edge in a circular pattern, overlapping slightly, until the center of the glass is mostly filled but there is still a small opening. Flip the glass over to release the "rose" and repeat with the remaining salami to make another.
  • Lay 1 sprig of parsley over each pizza half, then place the roses at the top.
  • Cut the pizza into wedges and serve warm.
  • Enjoy!

FRENCH BREAD / PIZZA CRUST / SANDWICH ROLLS

French Bread / Pizza Crust / Sandwich Rolls image

This is my most favorite recipe and I thought that I had lost it through moving, and relocating. Categories     Other Breads

Time 1h

Number Of Ingredients 9

1 1/2 c warm water - not hot
1 tsp salt
1 Tbsp sugar
1 Tbsp butter
3 1/2 c all purpose flour
1 pkg active dry yeast
CORN STARCH GLAZE
1/2 c cold water
1 tsp cornstarch

Steps:

  • 1. Preheat oven 375° Bake Time: approximately 20 minutes. My oven cooks hot and yours may need more or less cooking time.
  • 2. Combine the warm water, butter, salt, and sugar. Using water that is very warm will slowly melt the butter while combining. Sprinkle the yeast on top of your liquids mixture. (I own a Kitchen Aid and attach the dough hook and the batter guard.) Add your flour - I add all at once due to running my dough hook on low. Otherwise stir in the flour until it is a slightly sticky ball and knead. (With the Kitchen Aid run the dough hook adding flour until the batter no longer sticks to the bottom of the mixing bowl.)
  • 3. I usually knead the dough around 5 minutes. Well-kneaded dough should feel smooth and elastic. Press your fingertip into the dough; it should spring back. Butter a bowl, turning the dough to completely cover. Cover with a clean towel and let rise until doubled.
  • 4. Once dough is doubled remove and place on a slightly floured board. Knead in flour to feed it one more time before baking. Roll it into a a 12x15 rectangle after working additional flour into the dough.
  • 5. FRENCH BREAD: Roll up from long side and pinch the final seam together. Place seam side down on greased and cornmeal dusted baking sheet or use the Silicone Baking Mats. Cover with a clean towel or plastic wrap and let rise 45 minutes.
  • 6. SANDWICH ROLLS/BAGUETTES: Cut the rolled out dough into squares appropriate to your needs. Place on a greased baking sheet, cover with plastic wrap or a clean towel and let rise 45 minutes.
  • 7. CORNSTARCH GLAZE: NOTE: This is a typical mixture that professional bakers use to get that characteristic sheen on breads. I keep this mixture in my refrigerator to use on all the breads I bake. Save any glaze leftovers. 1/2 cup cold water 1 teaspoon cornstarch In a small saucepan, with a small whisk, stir together water and cornstarch. Heat mixture to a gentle boil. Stir, reduce heat, until mixture thickens and is translucent. Cool. Brush on loaf about 10 minutes before baking is finished and again 3 minutes before bread is completely done.
  • 8. When the bread is cooked, remove from oven and place the bread on a wire cooling rack to cool. Let baked loaf cool for 30 minutes before cutting (this is because the bread is still cooking while it is cooling). Makes 1 large loaf, 12 sandwich rolls, or 16 inch pizza crust.

DEEP-DISH FRENCH BREAD PIZZA

Categories     Lunch/Snacks

Time 50m

Yield 5 Pizzas

Number Of Ingredients 15

1 (14 1/2 ounce) can crushed tomatoes
1 garlic clove, minced
2 teaspoons dried oregano
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/2 teaspoon sugar
1/4 teaspoon fresh ground pepper
5 club rolls (5 to 6 inches in length)
1 tablespoon cooking oil
1 onion, chopped
1 lb ground beef
1 teaspoon salt
1/2 teaspoon pepper
4 -5 cremini mushrooms or 4 -5 button mushrooms, sliced
20 slices pepperoni
2 cups mozzarella cheese, shredded

Steps:

  • Preheat the oven to 350 degrees.
  • Pour the can of crushed tomatoes into a small bowl. Finely mince the garlic and toss in with the tomatoes (I like to use my microplane to do this since the garlic won't burn in the sauce and this way you won't get large chunks of raw garlic while you eat). Stir in the oregano, salt, sugar and pepper. Set aside.
  • Prepare the rolls: Cut off just the very top crust of the roll. Use your fingers to pull out the bread from inside the roll, creating a bowl. Be careful not to pull too much off from close to the sides and bottom as you don't want the ingredients to leak out. You will want the sides and bottom to be about ½-3/4" thick. (Toast up the bread you pulled out to use as croutons in a soup or salad to avoid waste!).
  • Heat the cooking oil in a sauté pan over medium-high heat. Add the onion and sauté for about 2-3 minutes or until tender. Add the ground beef to the pan and season with salt and pepper. Break up the meat as it cooks with a wooden spoon, stirring frequently until the meat is no longer pink. Remove from the heat and drain using a metal colander. Set aside.
  • Place the "bread bowls" onto a baking sheet. Spread the bottom of each with a good portion of the sauce. Then divide the ground beef mixture among the rolls (you don't want these to over flow too much, so use less beef if necessary). Layer the mushrooms and the pepperoni on top of the beef. Now top the each bun with the mozzarella cheese. The mixture/cheese should come just barely above the top of the bun as it will sink a little as it cooks.
  • Cook the deep dish pizzas for about 15-20 minutes, until the cheese is melted and bubbling, the bread is slightly toasted, and the ingredients are warmed through. Let sit for about 5 minutes before serving.

FRENCH BREAD FREEZER PIZZA LOAF

French Bread Freezer Pizza Loaf image

This is one of the "orphan recipes" I came across on here. However, my mom used to make these when I was a kid. She'd buy a loaf of french bread, slice horizontally along the side, add the meat mixture and freeze it. With 5 kids in the house during the summer, she'd make a few of these for us to make while she'd be at work. Since...

1 lb ground beef
1 lb sausage
2 c cheese (your choice of cheese-shredded, or diced)
1/2 tsp oregano
2 Tbsp ketchup
1/2 tsp worcestershire sauce
1 loaf french or italian bread, sliced horizontally

Steps:

  • 1. Brown meat, then add the other ingredients.
  • 2. Spoon filling into loaf that has been sliced; if freezing, wrap in foil and put in plastic bag of later use.
  • 3. Bake at 350 degrees for 8 to 10 minutes. If frozen, bake for about 20 min or until bread is crispy and filling is heated through.
  • 4. **** This can be altered to use with pepperoni, veggies, and any type of cheese including velveta. My Dad hated velveta so my mom never made it that way. If adding other items, reduce meat to 1/2 lb. of each. **** In my picture, I sliced bread on top because of how the loaf was baked. It was presplit on top and would not have worked with split on side.

Tips for Making Perfect French Bread Pizza:

  • Choose the Right Bread: Opt for a crusty bread with a firm texture, such as French bread, baguette, or ciabatta. Freshly baked bread works best, but you can also use day-old bread.
  • Prepare Your Toppings in Advance: Before you start assembling your pizza, prep and measure out all your toppings to save time and ensure even distribution.
  • Use a Variety of Toppings: Don't limit yourself to traditional pizza toppings. Experiment with different ingredients like roasted vegetables, grilled meats, or fresh herbs.
  • Don't Overload the Pizza: While tempting, loading your pizza with toppings can make it soggy and difficult to cook evenly.
  • Use High-Quality Cheese: Opt for a flavorful cheese that melts well, such as mozzarella, cheddar, or Parmesan.
  • Bake at a High Temperature: A hot oven will help create a crispy crust and prevent the bread from becoming soggy.
  • Watch the Cooking Time Closely: Keep an eye on your pizza to ensure it doesn't overcook and burn. The cooking time may vary depending on the thickness of your bread and the toppings used.

Conclusion:

French bread pizza is a delicious and versatile dish that can be enjoyed as an appetizer, main course, or snack. With its crispy crust, flavorful toppings, and gooey cheese, it's a crowd-pleaser that's perfect for parties or casual gatherings. So, gather your favorite toppings, preheat your oven, and get ready to indulge in this delightful culinary creation!
