My great grandmother used to serve onions and apples with pork quite often. This is as close as I could get to hers, but she usually used an iron skillet.

Time 35m

Number Of Ingredients 7

2 large onions, sliced
2 Tbsp butter, melted
6 large cooking apples, unpeeled and sliced
1/2 c brown sugar, firmly packed
1 tsp salt
1/2 tsp paprika
1/8 tsp ground nutmeg

Steps:

  • 1. Saute the onions in melted butter in a large saucepan over medium heat until tender.
  • 2. Place the apple slices on top of the onions. Combine the brown sugar and the remaining ingredients. Sprinkle over the apple slices. Cover and simmer for 12 to 14 minutes.
  • 3. Uncover and simmer an additional 5 minutes or until the apple slices are tender. Serve with a slotted spoon.

Tips:

  • Choose the right apples: For a sweet and tangy flavor, use a variety of apple that holds its shape well when cooked, such as Granny Smith or Honeycrisp. If you prefer a softer, sweeter apple, try a variety like Fuji or Gala.
  • Slice the apples and onions thinly: This will help them cook evenly and quickly. If the slices are too thick, they will take longer to cook and may not soften all the way through.
  • Use a large skillet or griddle: This will give the apples and onions plenty of room to spread out and cook evenly. If you crowd the pan, they will steam instead of fry and will not get as crispy.
  • Cook the apples and onions over medium-high heat: This will help them caramelize and develop a nice golden brown color. If you cook them over too low heat, they will take longer to cook and may not get as crispy.
  • Stir the apples and onions frequently: This will help them cook evenly and prevent them from sticking to the pan. If you do not stir them frequently, they may burn.
  • Season the apples and onions with your favorite spices: Some popular options include cinnamon, nutmeg, ginger, and cloves. You can also add a pinch of salt and pepper to taste.

Conclusion:

Fried apples and onions are a delicious and versatile dish that can be enjoyed as a side dish, main course, or snack. They are easy to make and can be tailored to your own taste preferences. With a little creativity, you can create a variety of different fried apple and onion dishes that will please everyone at your table.
