Time 10m

Number Of Ingredients 7

4 strips thick cut bacon, diced
3 tbsp butter
1 onion, diced
6 cloves garlic, diced
1 head cabbage, diced
2 tsp fresh cracked black pepper
1 tsp celtic sea salt

Steps:

  • Cut bacon into thick chunks, pan fry until crunchy. Remove from pan and set aside.
  • Drain off most of the bacon fat - leave a little if desired for taste, but too much will give an oily texture.
  • Heat butter in large pan on medium-high heat until melted and foamy.
  • Add diced onions to pan, cook until soft and transparent, about 4 minutes. Stir to prevent sticking or burning.
  • Add garlic and cabbage to the pan, tossing evenly to coat in butter.
  • Generously season with salt and pepper.
  • Let cabbage reduce by half, about 8 minutes, stirring occasionally as it cooks down to prevent burning and allow it to cook evenly. Add bacon back to pan.
  • When cabbage has lost much of it's volume and started to turn shiny, slightly translucent, and has lovely browned bits, it is ready to serve.
  • Serve immediately.
  • Leftovers can be stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to four days, three months in the freezer.

Tips:

  • Choose the right cabbage: For this recipe, it's best to use a firm, green cabbage. Avoid cabbages that are wilted or have brown spots.
  • Slice the cabbage thinly: This will help it cook evenly and quickly.
  • Use a large skillet: This will give the cabbage plenty of room to spread out and cook evenly.
  • Don't overcrowd the skillet: If you add too much cabbage to the skillet, it will steam instead of fry.
  • Cook the cabbage in batches if necessary: If your skillet isn't large enough to accommodate all of the cabbage in one go, cook it in batches.
  • Season the cabbage to taste: Add salt, pepper, and other seasonings to taste. You can also add a splash of vinegar or lemon juice for a tangy flavor.
  • Serve the cabbage immediately: Fried cabbage is best served hot and fresh. You can garnish it with chopped parsley or green onions.

Conclusion:

Fried cabbage with bacon and onion is a simple yet delicious side dish that can be enjoyed with a variety of main courses. It's a great way to use up leftover cabbage, and it's also a budget-friendly option. With just a few simple ingredients, you can create a flavorful and satisfying dish that the whole family will love.
