Steps:
- In large bowl, combine margarine, confectioners' sugar, condensed milk, coconut, chopped walnuts and vanilla. Stir well. Cover and chill in the refrigerator for 2 hours, or until mixture has thickened enough to roll into balls. Roll the mixture into 1-inch balls and place close together, but not touching, on cookie sheets. Freeze until hard.
- While bonbons are freezing, line a cookie sheet or flat surface with waxed paper. Combine chocolate chips and shortening in the top of a double boiler, over, not in, simmering water. Stir until melted. Using a toothpick or a fork, dip each bonbon in the melted chocolate. Place on waxed paper to dry. When chocolate has hardened, store bonbons in plastic bag in the freezer.

Tips:
- Use high-quality chocolate: The quality of the chocolate you use will greatly affect the taste of your bonbons. Look for chocolate that is at least 70% cacao and has a smooth, velvety texture.
- Temper the chocolate: Tempering the chocolate is a process that stabilizes the cocoa butter and prevents the chocolate from seizing. This will result in a smooth, shiny finish and a more consistent texture.
- Use a variety of fillings: There are endless possibilities when it comes to fillings for bonbons. You can use anything from ganache to caramel to nuts to fruits. Get creative and experiment with different flavors to find your favorites.
- Decorate your bonbons: Once your bonbons are filled, you can decorate them with a variety of toppings. Some popular options include melted chocolate, sprinkles, nuts, and edible glitter.
- Store your bonbons properly: Bonbons should be stored in a cool, dry place. They will keep for up to 2 weeks.
