BIG OATMEAL CHOCOLATE CHIP COOKIES

Big Oatmeal Chocolate Chip Cookies image

From Sunset's Cookies, cookbook. My DH thinks these are the greatest! I admit that they do make great gifts. From the intro: "Oversized cookies, often best-sellers at fund-raising events, are easy to make at home. [These...] reach a diameter of about 7 inches -- enough cookie to last all day! For variety, you can use butterscotch-flavored chips instead of chocolate."

GIANT CHOCOLATE SUGAR COOKIES

Giant Chocolate Sugar Cookies image

These oversize sugar cookies don't need any mix-ins or frostings -- their bold chocolate flavor says it all.

Provided by Martha Stewart

Categories     Food & Cooking     Dessert & Treats Recipes     Cookie Recipes

Number Of Ingredients 9

1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
1/2 cup good-quality unsweetened Dutch-process cocoa powder
1 teaspoon baking powder
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/2 cup (1 stick) unsalted butter, softened
1 1/2 cups sugar
1/2 cup vegetable shortening, substitute 1/2 cup unsalted butter, melted and cooled
1 large egg
1 1/2 teaspoons pure vanilla extract

Steps:

  • Preheat oven to 375 degrees. Whisk together flour, cocoa powder, baking powder, and salt in a medium bowl; set aside.
  • Put butter and sugar into the bowl of an electric mixer fitted with the paddle attachment. Mix on medium-high speed until pale and fluffy. Mix in shortening (or additional butter). Add egg and vanilla; mix until creamy. Reduce speed to low. Gradually add flour mixture, and mix until just combined.
  • Using a 2 1/2-inch ice cream scoop, drop dough onto baking sheets lined with parchment paper, spacing about 4 inches apart. Bake until edges are firm, 18 to 20 minutes. Let cool on sheets on wire racks. Cookies can be stored in an airtight container up to 2 days.

Tips:

  • Use quality ingredients: The better the ingredients, the better the cookies will be. Use real butter, not margarine, and good-quality chocolate chips.
  • Don't overmix the dough: Overmixing the dough will make the cookies tough. Mix just until the ingredients are combined.
  • Chill the dough before baking: Chilling the dough will help the cookies hold their shape and prevent them from spreading too much.
  • Bake the cookies at a high temperature: Baking the cookies at a high temperature will help them get a crispy exterior and a chewy interior.
  • Let the cookies cool before eating: The cookies will continue to cook as they cool, so let them cool for a few minutes before eating them.

Conclusion:

These giant oatmeal chocolate chip cookies are the perfect treat for any occasion. They're big, chewy, and loaded with chocolate chips. Plus, they're easy to make and can be enjoyed by people of all ages. So next time you're in the mood for a sweet treat, give these cookies a try. You won't be disappointed!
