MOM'S WARM MILK

When my boys had a hard time getting to sleep I came up with this warm milk to help calm them. Even now, years after they began drinking it, they still enjoy it during homework, or after coming in from a cold day of play. I, too, have enjoyed it after a long day's work. I hope you enjoy this recipe as well for years to come.

GRANDMA'S WARM MILK

Enjoy the old standby nighttime drink promoting restful slumber. Milk contains a protein alpha-lactalbumin, rich in tryptophan, that tells the brain to sleep. Plus you wake up feeling rested the next morning, without the side effects that often come with sleep-inducing drugs.

Time 20m

Yield 2

Number Of Ingredients 8

¼ cup all-purpose flour
2 tablespoons white sugar
2 egg yolks
1 cup milk
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
2 egg whites
2 tablespoons white sugar
1 teaspoon vanilla extract

Steps:

  • Whisk the flour and 2 tablespoons of white sugar together in a small bowl until combined; set aside. Whisk together the egg yolks, milk, and 1 teaspoon vanilla extract in a small saucepan until smooth. Place the saucepan over medium-high heat, and stir constantly. Once the mixture is warm, whisk in the flour mixture, and continue cooking until the sauce has thickened, about 5 minutes. Whisk constantly as the sauce cooks to keep it from scorching. Once thick, keep warm over low heat.
  • Beat egg whites until foamy in a large glass or metal mixing bowl. Gradually add the remaining 2 tablespoons sugar, continuing to beat until stiff peaks form. Lift your beater or whisk straight up: the egg whites should form a sharp peak that holds its shape. Finally, beat in the remaining 1 teaspoon vanilla extract.
  • Pour the hot sauce over the egg whites, and gently fold together using a rubber scraper until well incorporated. Do not mix vigorously, or the egg whites will deflate. Serve warm.

Time 40m

Yield 1 cake, 6-10 serving(s)

Number Of Ingredients 8

1 cup flour
1 teaspoon baking powder
1/4 teaspoon salt
2 tablespoons butter
1/2 cup hot milk
2 eggs
1 cup sugar
1 teaspoon vanilla

Steps:

  • Sift together dry ingredients.
  • Add butter to milk; keep hot.
  • Beat eggs until thick and lemon-coloured (about 3 minutes at high speed on mixer).
  • Gradually add sugar, beating constantly at medium speed for 4 to 5 minutes.
  • Quickly add flour ingredients to egg mixture; stir just until blended.
  • Stir in hot milk mixture and vanilla: blend well.
  • Pour into a 9 x 1 1/2 " round pan.
  • Bake at 350 degrees for 25-30 minutes.
  • Cool cake in pan; about 15 minutes; then remove to rack.
  • Top with your favorite icing or: 1 1/2 cup icing sugar, add milk until creamy texture (about 3 tbsp) and a slpash of vanilla.
  • Enjoy!

Tips:

  • Choose the right milk: Whole milk or 2% milk is ideal for warm milk, as they provide a richer flavor and texture. You can also use almond milk, soy milk, or coconut milk, but they may have a slightly different flavor.
  • Heat the milk slowly: Heating the milk too quickly can cause it to curdle. Heat it over medium-low heat, stirring constantly, until it just begins to simmer.
  • Add flavorings: Honey, maple syrup, vanilla extract, cinnamon, and nutmeg are all popular flavorings for warm milk. You can also add a pinch of salt to balance the sweetness.
  • Serve warm: Warm milk is best enjoyed immediately after it is heated. You can also store it in a thermos for later.

Conclusion:

Warm milk is a comforting and nostalgic drink that can be enjoyed by people of all ages. It is a good source of calcium and protein, and it can help to promote relaxation and sleep. With so many different ways to flavor it, warm milk is a versatile drink that can be enjoyed in many different ways.
