GRILLED HOAGIE BURGERS

Grilled Hoagie Burgers image

Check out this deceptively simple makeover for everyday burgers: a different kind of bun, and a quick swipe of herb-flecked spreadable cheese.

Provided by Betty Crocker Kitchens

Categories     Entree

Time 40m

Yield 4

Number Of Ingredients 8

1 1/2 lb lean (at least 80%) ground beef
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/2 teaspoon pepper
2 sweet onions, halved, thinly sliced and separated into half-rings
Cooking spray
1/2 cup garlic-and-herb spreadable cheese (from 4- to 6.5-oz container)
4 hoagie buns, split
4 leaves green leaf lettuce

Steps:

  • Heat gas or charcoal grill. In medium bowl, mix ground beef, salt and pepper. Shape mixture into 4 oval patties, about 1/2 inch thick, to fit hoagie buns.
  • Cut 2 (18x12-inch) sheets of heavy-duty foil. Generously spray half of one side of each foil sheet with cooking spray. Place onions evenly in center of sprayed portion of foil; generously spray onions with cooking spray. Fold unsprayed half of foil over onions so edges meet; seal edges with tight 1/2-inch folds and fold again, allowing room for heat expansion.
  • When grill is heated, place patties and packets on gas grill over medium heat or on charcoal grill over medium coals; cover grill. Cook 11 to 13 minutes, turning patties and packets over once, until meat thermometer inserted in center of patties reads 160°F and onions are tender.
  • Spread cheese onto bottom halves of buns. Top each with lettuce leaf, patty and onions. Cover with top halves of buns.

GRILLED PORTOBELLO, BLUE CHEESE AND CARAMELIZED ONION HOAGIE

Grilled Portobello, Blue Cheese and Caramelized Onion Hoagie image

Provided by Katie Lee Biegel

Categories     main-dish

Time 1h35m

Yield 4 servings

Number Of Ingredients 17

1/4 cup extra-virgin olive oil
1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
1/2 teaspoon kosher salt
1/4 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper
1/4 teaspoon garlic powder
Juice of 1/2 lemon
4 portobello mushrooms, sliced 1/4 inch thick
2 tablespoons olive oil
2 yellow onions, halved and thinly sliced
Kosher salt and freshly ground black pepper
Blue Cheese Spread:
4 ounces blue cheese, crumbled
1/3 cup mayonnaise
4 hoagie rolls (I like Martin's), split
1 cup arugula
Balsamic vinegar, for drizzling
Kosher salt

Steps:

  • For the mushrooms: In a large bowl or a ziptop bag, whisk the olive oil, Worcestershire sauce, salt, pepper, garlic powder and lemon juice. Add the mushrooms and toss to combine. Marinate for 30 minutes to 1 hour.
  • For the onions: While the mushrooms marinate, make the onions. In a large skillet over medium high, heat the olive oil. Add the onions and saute until beginning to get tender, about 5 minutes. Season with salt and pepper. Reduce the heat to low. Cook, stirring occasionally, until the onions become a deep brown caramelized color, about 20 minutes. If they start to look dry or stick to the pan, add a tablespoon or 2 of water.
  • For the blue cheese spread: In a small bowl, mix the blue cheese and mayonnaise.
  • Heat a grill pan over medium-high heat.
  • Remove the mushrooms from the marinade and transfer to the grill pan. Cook until slightly wilted, browned and showing grill marks, 2 to 3 minutes per side.
  • For the sandwiches: Put the hoagie rolls on the grill pan until lightly toasted. Spread one side of each roll with the blue cheese spread. Top with some mushrooms, caramelized onions and arugula. Drizzle lightly with balsamic vinegar and a sprinkle of salt.

GRILLED HAMBURGERS

Grilled Hamburgers image

We cook a lot of burgers indoors on a fat-slicked iron skillet, and you can do that on a grill as well. (Here's our burger guide for more information and inspiration.) But sometimes you want a smoky grilled burger. For that, a charcoal grill is best, but a gas grill can do the trick, too. Resist the temptation to press down on the burgers with a spatula, which only spews juice and fat on the fire, causing the flames to flare up and the burger to lose flavor. If you feel your burger is cooking too quickly, use the cooler sides of the grill to rest them. And remember: lowering the top on the grill helps cheese melt.

Time 15m

Yield 4 servings

Number Of Ingredients 4

1 1/2 pounds ground beef, about 20 percent fat
Kosher salt and black pepper
Cheese slices (optional)
4 hamburger buns, split

Steps:

  • Start a charcoal fire or heat a gas grill. (Check out our grilling guide for how.) Form the patties into 3/4-inch burgers, being careful not to make them too loose or too large, then make a deep depression in the center of each burger with your thumb. Season both sides of the each burger aggressively with kosher salt and black pepper.
  • Place burgers on a hot grill and cook, without moving, for about 3 minutes. Use a spatula to turn the hamburger over. If using cheese, lay slices on the meat. Continue to cook until the burgers are cooked through, about another 3 to 4 minutes for medium-rare. Remove the burgers from the grill and allow to rest for a few minutes while you toast the buns. Top the burgers as you desire.

Tips:

  • Choose the right buns: Hoagie buns are typically long and narrow, making them perfect for holding all the toppings of a burger. Look for buns that are soft and slightly toasted.
  • Use high-quality ground beef: The quality of the ground beef is essential for a juicy and flavorful burger. Look for ground beef that is at least 80% lean and has a good amount of marbling.
  • Season the beef well: Before cooking, season the ground beef with salt, pepper, and any other desired spices. This will help to enhance the flavor of the burgers.
  • Cook the burgers over medium heat: Cooking the burgers over medium heat will help to prevent them from drying out. Cook the burgers for about 4-5 minutes per side, or until they are cooked to your desired doneness.
  • Add your favorite toppings: The sky is the limit when it comes to toppings for hoagie burgers. Some popular options include cheese, lettuce, tomato, onion, pickles, and ketchup.

Conclusion:

Grilled hoagie burgers are a delicious and easy-to-make meal that is perfect for any occasion. With a few simple tips, you can make the best hoagie burgers that will be sure to please everyone at your table. So fire up the grill and get started today!
