Steps:
- Cook the noodles as directed in the recipe for Ukrainian LOKSHYNA (egg noodles).
- Mix the drained noodles with the melted butter.
- Mix in the ham and cheese.
- Combine the egg, cream, and salt, and add to the mixture.
- If the ham is very salty, reduce the salt or omit it.
- Spoon into a buttered baking dish and top with the buttered bread crumbs.
- Bake in a moderate oven (350 degrees F) for about 45 minutes, or until done.
Tips:
- Use a variety of cheeses. This will give your casserole a more complex and flavorful taste. Cheddar, Parmesan, and mozzarella are all good choices.
- Cook the noodles al dente. This means cooking them until they are tender but still have a slight bite to them. This will prevent them from becoming mushy in the casserole.
- Don't overcook the ham. Ham is a delicate meat, and overcooking it can make it tough and dry. Cook it until it is just heated through.
- Use a creamy sauce. This will help to bind the ingredients together and make the casserole more moist. A simple white sauce or a cream of mushroom soup are both good options.
- Top the casserole with breadcrumbs or crushed crackers. This will give it a golden brown crust and add a bit of extra flavor.
Conclusion:
Ham and noodle casserole is a classic comfort food dish that is perfect for a weeknight meal. It is easy to make and can be tailored to your own taste. With a few simple tips, you can make a ham and noodle casserole that your whole family will love.
