These make a great, easy meal. They're also great to make/take for large gatherings; you can put the ham barbecue in a crock pot to keep warm. I sometimes put a slice of cheese on them before serving.

PITTSBURGH HAM BARBECUE SANDWICHES

Pittsburgh Ham Barbecue Sandwiches image

There are various versions of this recipe on zaar, but this one is my favorite. The key ingredient is the chili sauce, preferably Heinz. In Pittsburgh, Isaly's "chipped chopped" ham is the brand of choice but it is hard to find outside of western Pennsylvania. The best alternative is to have the butcher slice the ham very thin (almost like shaving it), and then chop all those slices coarsely. These sandwiches are a hot and sweet treat with a little spice and a Pittsburgh favorite. I got it from a local Pittsburgh cookbook.

Busy Fogelsville, Pennsylvania cook Constance Eddy writes, This tangy sauce freezes well and is even better when it's reheated. "It's great on hot dogs, too! You can also fix it ahead...and keep it warm in the slow cooker if you make a larger amount for picnic or party fare."

Tips:

  • Choose a high-quality bun. The bun is an important part of the sandwich, so make sure you choose one that is soft and fluffy. You can use a variety of buns, such as hamburger buns, hoagie rolls, or Kaiser rolls.
  • Use fresh ingredients. The fresher the ingredients, the better the sandwich will taste. This is especially true for the barbecue sauce and the coleslaw.
  • Cook the ham thoroughly. Ham should be cooked to an internal temperature of 145 degrees Fahrenheit. This will ensure that the ham is safe to eat and that it is fully cooked.
  • Don't overcook the ham. Overcooked ham will be dry and tough. Cook the ham just until it reaches an internal temperature of 145 degrees Fahrenheit.
  • Use a variety of toppings. You can top your ham barbecue sandwich with a variety of toppings, such as cheese, coleslaw, onion rings, or pickles.
  • Serve the sandwich immediately. Ham barbecue sandwiches are best served immediately after they are made. This will ensure that the bun is soft and fluffy and that the ham is hot and juicy.

Conclusion:

Ham barbecue sandwiches are a delicious and easy-to-make meal. They are perfect for a summer cookout or a casual dinner. With a few simple ingredients, you can make a ham barbecue sandwich that is sure to please everyone at your table.
