Yield 8 serving(s)

Number Of Ingredients 10

1 1/2 cups flour
3/4 cup whole wheat flour
1 tablespoon baking powder
1 teaspoon garlic salt with parsley
3 tablespoons butter, grated
1/4-1/2 cup onion, chopped
1 cup cheddar cheese, grated
1 cup ham, chopped
1 1/4 cups buttermilk
1 egg

Steps:

  • Place flour, baking powder, garlic salt in mixing bowl and stir together. Grate cold butter into mixture and stir till coarse meal.
  • In a seperate bowl whisk together buttermilk and egg. Add this to the dry mixture as well as the cheese, onion and ham.Stir just till combined.
  • Place this on a floured board and knead a few times. Pat into a 1" thick shape and cut with a large cookie cutter.
  • Place on greased baking sheet or sheet lined with parchment paper. Bake at 350 degrees for 20-25 minutes.

Tips:

  • Use cold butter: Cold butter is essential for creating flaky scones. When the butter is cold, it will stay in small pieces and create pockets of steam as it bakes, resulting in a light and airy texture.
  • Don't overwork the dough: Overworking the dough will make the scones tough. Gently mix the ingredients until just combined.
  • Chill the dough before baking: Chilling the dough before baking will help the scones to rise evenly and prevent them from spreading too much.
  • Bake the scones until they are golden brown: The scones are done baking when they are golden brown on top and a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.

Conclusion:

Ham and cheese scones are a delicious and versatile treat that can be enjoyed for breakfast, lunch, or dinner. They are easy to make and can be customized with your favorite ingredients. Whether you like them plain or loaded with cheese, ham, and chives, these scones are sure to be a hit.
