Categories     Appetizer     Snack

Time 50m

Number Of Ingredients 8

1 ¼ lbs ground beef
1 lb hot pork sausage (I used Jimmy Dean's)
1 lb processed cheese (I used Velveeta)
1 tsp ground oregano
1 tsp garlic powder
½ tsp crushed red pepper
1 pinch fennel seeds
1 loaf party rye bread (sometimes called cocktail rye bread)

Steps:

  • Preheat oven to 400 degrees F.
  • Add ground beef and sausage to a large skillet over medium-high heat. Stir and cook until browned. Use a potato masher or large fork to break up any large clumps of meat.
  • When the meat has browned, drain off any excess fat.
  • Add oregano, garlic powder, crushed red pepper, and fennel seeds. Reduce the heat to low and continue cooking for 20 minutes.
  • Cut the cheese into cubes and add to the meat mixture. Stir until the cheese has melted and everything is thoroughly blended, remove from the heat.
  • Use a small ice-cream scoop (about 1¼ inches in diameter) or a tablespoon to add a dollop of the meat and cheese mixture to each piece of bread.
  • Place on a cookie sheet and bake for 8-10 minutes, or until the bread is toasted and the topping is bubbling.
  • Serve warm or at room temperature.

HANKY PANKY

Hanky Panky image

This sweet 50/50 martini was created in the early 1900s by Ada Coleman, the head bartender at the American Bar at the Savoy Hotel in London. It combines equal parts gin and sweet vermouth, finished with a splash of the bittersweet Italian amaro Fernet-Branca. Stick with the original recipe and use Fernet-Branca, or substitute another fernet. The amount you deploy depends on both individual taste and the intensity of the fernet used, so add it slowly, and as you like.

Provided by Rebekah Peppler

Categories     cocktails

Yield 1 drink

Number Of Ingredients 5

Ice
1 1/2 ounces gin
1 1/2 ounces sweet vermouth
1/4 to 1/2 teaspoon fernet, such as Fernet-Branca, Contratto Fernet or Faccia Brutto Fernet Pianta
1 (2-inch-long) piece of orange peel, for serving

Steps:

  • Place a coupe or Nick and Nora glass in the freezer to chill for at least 15 minutes and up to an hour. (Alternatively, fill the coupe with ice and water, stir for 30 seconds, pour out the ice and water, and pour the finished drink into the now-chilled glass.)
  • In a cocktail shaker or mixing glass filled with ice, combine the gin, vermouth and fernet. Stir until very cold, about 30 seconds, then strain into the chilled cocktail glass. Hold the orange peel by its long edges, skin facing down into the glass. Pinch the peel to express the citrus oils into the glass and garnish with the orange peel.

Tips:

  • Use a variety of fillings. Hanky pankies can be filled with anything from traditional ingredients like minced beef or sausage to more creative options like vegetables, cheese, or even fruit.
  • Don't be afraid to experiment with flavors. Hanky pankies are a great way to use up leftover ingredients or to try out new flavor combinations.
  • Make sure the dough is thin and pliable. This will help the hanky pankies to cook evenly and will prevent them from becoming too doughy.
  • Cook the hanky pankies in a hot skillet until they are golden brown. This will help to seal in the flavor and prevent the filling from becoming dry.
  • Serve the hanky pankies with your favorite dipping sauce. Popular options include tomato sauce, marinara sauce, or ranch dressing.

Conclusion:

Hanky pankies are a delicious and versatile dish that can be enjoyed by people of all ages. With a variety of fillings and flavors to choose from, there is sure to be a hanky panky recipe that everyone will love. So next time you're looking for a quick and easy meal, give hanky pankies a try.
