Time 20m

Yield 4 serving(s)

Number Of Ingredients 9

1/2 cup onion, chopped
1 garlic clove, minced
10 ounces ground turkey
1/2 cup canned black beans, rinsed
1 cup tomato puree
1 tablespoon cider vinegar
1 teaspoon chili powder
1/4 teaspoon mustard powder
8 whole wheat dinner rolls

Steps:

  • Lightly coat a medium skillet with cooking spray and heat over medium-high. Add onion and garlic and cook until onion softens, about 5 minutes.
  • Add ground turkey and cook, stirring to break up the meat. Cook until no longer pink, about 5 minutes.
  • Stir in remaining ingredients (except dinner rolls!). Cook until bubbly and slightly thickened. Divide evenly over dinner rolls and serve hot.

Tips:

  • Choose lean ground beef: To make your sloppy joes healthier, opt for lean ground beef with a fat content of 90% or less. This will reduce the amount of saturated fat and cholesterol in the dish.
  • Use whole-wheat buns: Instead of white bread, use whole-wheat buns to increase the fiber and nutrient content of your sloppy joes.
  • Add plenty of vegetables: To boost the nutritional value of your sloppy joes, add plenty of vegetables such as onions, bell peppers, and mushrooms. These vegetables will add flavor, texture, and essential nutrients to the dish.
  • Use a healthy sauce: Instead of using a store-bought sauce that is high in sugar and sodium, make your own sauce using fresh ingredients. You can use a combination of tomato sauce, ketchup, mustard, and spices to create a delicious and healthy sauce.
  • Go easy on the cheese: Cheese can be high in saturated fat and cholesterol, so use it sparingly on your sloppy joes. If you do want to add cheese, choose a low-fat or fat-free variety.

Conclusion:

Healthy sloppy joes are a delicious and satisfying meal that can be enjoyed by people of all ages. By following these tips, you can make sloppy joes that are not only tasty, but also good for you. So next time you're looking for a quick and easy meal, give healthy sloppy joes a try!
