HEARTY BBQ BAKED BEANS

Hearty BBQ Baked Beans image

These beans have lots of flavor. I don't care for beans that are to sweet but you can add 2 tablespoons of brown sugar to sweeten these up. They go excellent with grilling. I use Bush's original beans and Jack Daniels BBQ sauce but you can use what you prefer. Reduce baking time to 1 hr if you don't like a thick beans.

Time 1h15m

Yield 1 13x9x2 pan, 10 serving(s)

Number Of Ingredients 7

2 (28 ounce) cans baked beans
1 1/2 lbs linguica sausage, sliced
1 (20 ounce) can crushed pineapple
1 large diced onion
1 1/2 cups barbecue sauce
1/4 cup light brown sugar
1/4 cup yellow mustard

Steps:

  • Brown linguica on stove top with diced onions and let cool slightly. Combine all remaining ingredients then fold in cooked linguica and onions. Pour into greased baking dish and bake covered in a 350 degree oven for about 30 minutes then remove the cover and bake for an additional 15 minutes.

Tips:

  • Choose the Right Beans: Use dried beans for the best flavor and texture. Great Northern, pinto, and navy beans are popular choices.
  • Soak the Beans: Soaking the beans overnight or for at least 8 hours helps to soften them and reduce cooking time. Don't forget to rinse them well before cooking.
  • Use Quality Ingredients: Fresh vegetables, herbs, and spices elevate the flavor of baked beans. Onion, celery, garlic, bell peppers, and tomatoes are common additions.
  • Don't Overcook the Beans: Overcooked beans become mushy and lose their flavor. Simmer them gently until they are tender but still hold their shape.
  • Add Some Sweetness: A touch of sweetness balances the savory flavors in baked beans. Common sweeteners include brown sugar, molasses, or maple syrup.
  • Add Some Spice: A bit of heat adds depth of flavor to baked beans. Use chili powder, cayenne pepper, or smoked paprika to taste.
  • Bake it Low and Slow: Baking the beans at a low temperature (around 300°F) for several hours allows the flavors to meld and develop.
  • Let it Rest: After baking, let the beans rest for at least 15 minutes before serving. This allows the flavors to settle and the beans to firm up slightly.

Conclusion:

Baked beans are a classic comfort food that can be enjoyed in many different ways. Whether you prefer them sweet, spicy, or somewhere in between, there's a recipe out there to suit your taste. With a little planning and effort, you can easily make a delicious pot of baked beans at home. So next time you're looking for a hearty, flavorful meal, give baked beans a try. You won't be disappointed!
