This is my cousin, Lorraine's, recipe. She made this years ago when my husband, son & I were visiting and I asked for the recipe. I think of her every single time I make this cake! It is so good and moist. Oh, and it's really good with a scoop of vanilla ice cream (Bryers is our favorite) on top.

Number Of Ingredients 11

1/2 cup margarine or 1/2 cup butter
1 cup sugar
4 eggs
1 cup flour
1 teaspoon baking powder
1/4 teaspoon salt
1 (16 ounce) can hershey chocolate syrup
1/2 cup margarine or 1/2 cup butter
1 cup sugar
1/3 cup milk
1/2 cup chocolate chips

Steps:

  • For cake: Cream margarine and sugar; then add eggs one at a time and beat well, after each.
  • Sift dry ingredients and add to above mixture.
  • Add syrup and bake at 350 degrees for 50 minutes in 13x9 inch pan.
  • Do not over bake.
  • Ice while hot.
  • For icing: Boil margarine, milk and sugar together for two to three minutes.
  • Add chocolate chips, beat until smooth.
  • Pour on cake.

Tips:

  • Make sure your oven is preheated to the correct temperature before baking the cake. This will help ensure that the cake bakes evenly.
  • Use a large bowl to mix the batter. This will give you plenty of room to stir and mix the ingredients together.
  • Be sure to grease and flour the baking pan before pouring in the batter. This will help prevent the cake from sticking to the pan.
  • Bake the cake for the amount of time specified in the recipe. Overbaking the cake will make it dry and crumbly.
  • Let the cake cool completely before frosting it. This will help the frosting set properly.
