3 lbs beef brisket
1 onion, sliced
2 lbs carrots, sliced in large pieces
1 (1 ounce) package onion soup mix
1 (8 ounce) can tomato sauce
1 (16 ounce) can cranberry sauce (i use home made)
salt and pepper

  • Surround with carrots and sliced onion.
  • Top with onion soup mixture, tomato sauce, cranberry sauce.
  • Cover with heavy duty foil and cook 5 hours.
  • Slice against the grain, serve with pan gravy.

Tips:

  • Choose the right cut of beef: Brisket is a tough cut of meat, so it needs to be cooked slowly and at a low temperature to tenderize it. The best cuts of brisket for braising are the flat cut and the point cut. The flat cut is leaner and has a more uniform shape, while the point cut is fattier and has more marbling.
  • Use a good quality braising liquid: The braising liquid is what will flavor the brisket, so it's important to use a good quality liquid. Some good options include beef broth, chicken broth, red wine, or a combination of these liquids. You can also add vegetables, herbs, and spices to the braising liquid to enhance the flavor.
  • Braise the brisket low and slow: Brisket needs to be cooked slowly and at a low temperature to tenderize it. The ideal braising temperature is between 275 degrees Fahrenheit and 300 degrees Fahrenheit. Cook the brisket for at least 3 hours, or until it is fall-apart tender.
  • Let the brisket rest before serving: Once the brisket is cooked, let it rest for at least 15 minutes before serving. This will allow the juices to redistribute throughout the meat, making it more tender and flavorful.

Conclusion:

Braised brisket is a delicious and hearty dish that is perfect for a special occasion or a casual meal. With a little planning and effort, you can easily make braised brisket at home. Just remember to choose a good quality cut of beef, use a good quality braising liquid, and braise the brisket low and slow. With a little patience, you'll be rewarded with a tender and flavorful brisket that your family and friends will love.
