HOT DOGS AND SAUERKRAUT

This is so simple to make but tastes so good! My mom made this for us when we were younger and still a favorite of mine. Smoked sausage could also be used but I prefer the hot dogs. Serve this over mashed potatoes for total comfort food.

HOT DOGS, SAUERKRAUT, AND POTATOES

Hot Dogs, Sauerkraut, and Potatoes image

This isn't an actual recipe, but it's a description of a meal my mother used to fix many years ago. She made it to use up leftover hot dogs. Recently I saw a similar one on "Zaar but it didn't have the potatoes. The amounts listed are only approximate because I was required to list something.

Time 20m

Yield 8 cups, 4-6 serving(s)

Number Of Ingredients 3

4 potatoes
3 cups sauerkraut
4 frankfurters

Steps:

  • Boil peeled potatoes (cut in quarters) until tender but not mushy. Drain, and add to the pan the amount of sauerkraut for the number of people you've planned to feed. Also add hot dogs cut into 1 inch pieces. Heat everything, but watch carefully to avoid burning. Add butter if desired. We always ate this with mustard for the sauerkraut and hot dogs.
  • The next day my mother would heat leftovers in a frying pan, letting the sauerkraut get brown.

Tips:

  • Choose the right hot dogs: Look for high-quality hot dogs made with premium cuts of meat. Avoid hot dogs that are made with fillers or low-quality ingredients.
  • Cook the hot dogs properly: There are several ways to cook hot dogs, but the most popular methods are grilling, boiling, and frying. Grill hot dogs over medium heat until they are cooked through, about 5-7 minutes per side. Boil hot dogs in a pot of water until they are heated through, about 3-5 minutes. Fry hot dogs in a pan with a little bit of oil until they are browned and cooked through, about 2-3 minutes per side.
  • Use good quality sauerkraut: Look for sauerkraut that is made with fresh cabbage and has a tangy, slightly sour flavor. Avoid sauerkraut that is made with canned or frozen cabbage, as it will not have the same flavor or texture.
  • Choose your cheese wisely: There are many different types of cheese that can be used on hot dogs, but some of the most popular include cheddar cheese, Swiss cheese, and American cheese. Choose a cheese that melts well and has a flavor that you enjoy. You will also need about 3 tablespoons of cheese per hot dog.
  • Add your favorite toppings: In addition to sauerkraut and cheese, you can also add other toppings to your hot dogs, such as onions, relish, mustard, ketchup, or pickles. Get creative and experiment with different toppings to find your favorite combination.

Conclusion:

Hot dogs with sauerkraut and cheese are a classic combination that is loved by people of all ages. They are easy to make and can be enjoyed as a quick and easy meal or as a party snack. With a few simple tips, you can make the perfect hot dog with sauerkraut and cheese that is sure to please everyone.
