HOT SPICED TEA FOR THE HOLIDAYS

Hot Spiced Tea for the Holidays image

This is an old family favorite, handed down from my great-grandmother. The holidays officially begin with Christmas carols and my favorite hot spiced tea! Definitely a seasonal comfort beverage for me! I prefer to use fresh juices with pulp. The flavors are different. Canned pineapple in light syrup is best. Set the pineapple chunks aside for the rest of your holiday baking. Store leftovers in refrigerator and reheat as needed.

HOT SPICED TEA (TANG-BASED, AKA RUSSIAN TEA)

Hot Spiced Tea (Tang-Based, Aka Russian Tea) image

This powdered hot tea mix flavored with orange, cloves, and cinnamon has been a favorite of mine since childhood... and is now a favorite inexpensive gift for friends and family. Our family can't go through fall or winter without it! (The vitamin C, cinnamon, and cloves are all proven germfighters, too!)

Time 5m

Yield 2 3/4 cups, 35 serving(s)

Number Of Ingredients 5

20 ounces tang powdered drink mix (one full tub)
1/3 cup instant tea (I use the kind with lemon)
3/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon
3/8 teaspoon ground cloves
2 tablespoons granulated sugar (or 3 if you like it sweeter)

Steps:

  • Mix all ingredients thoroughly. A food processor makes this effortless, but I managed with a blender for years, and have even stirred it together by hand when necessary-- although it's not quite as pretty when done that way.
  • To enjoy: stir 2-3 heaping teaspoons into a mug of hot water and adjust to suit your own taste. Ahhh!
  • This mix starts to harden in the jar after six months or so, so drink up! Servings and Yield are approximations only.

SPICED TEA MIX

Spiced Tea Mix image

I have been making this Spiced Tea Mix for over 30 years now, and it's such a wonderful treat that we look forward to every Christmas. I usually make a double or triple batch so I have extra (which I place in decorative jars or cellophane treat bags) to give as Christmas gifts to special friends, co-workers, my kids' teachers, bus drivers, and coaches. And every year I get requests for more, and someone always asks for the recipe. Feel free to adjust the ingredient amounts to suit your taste preferences. Serving size and yield are approximate (as preferences for stronger or weaker beverages can vary).

1 cup instant tea powder
3 ounces powdered unsweetened lemonade mix (about 1/2 cup)
1 1/2 cups sugar
2 teaspoons ground cinnamon
2 teaspoons ground cloves
cinnamon stick (optional, for stirring)

Steps:

  • Mix all ingredients in a large bowl and stir with a wooden spoon until all of the ingredients are well blended.
  • Store the mix in an air-tight container.
  • When ready to serve, place 3 teaspoons of the mix in a coffee mug and add 1 cup of hot water. Stir with a whole cinnamon stick, and serve while hot.
  • NOTE: Measurements are approximate; adjust ingredient amounts to suit your taste preferences.
  • GIFT-GIVING TIP - This is a wonderful treat that is suitable for gift-giving. Place about 1 1/2 cups of the mix in a decorative glass jar, a strong cellophane bag, or a pretty holiday tin. Tie a festive holiday ribbon around the neck of the jar (or top of the bag), or secure a pretty bow to the top of the tin. For special touch, attach 3 or 4 cinnamon sticks to the ribbon. Be sure to add a label to the package with instructions to place 3 teaspoons of the spiced tea mix to a coffee mug and add 1 cup hot water.

Tips:

  • Ensure you use fresh and whole spices whenever possible. Freshly ground spices offer the most flavor.
  • Store your tea mix in an airtight container away from direct light and heat to maintain its freshness.
  • Adjust the quantity of each spice to suit your taste. For a milder flavor, use less ginger and black pepper. For a more robust flavor, use more cardamom and cloves.
  • Experiment with different sweeteners, such as honey, maple syrup, or sugar, to find the one you like best.
  • Garnish your tea with a cinnamon stick, star anise, or a slice of orange for an extra touch of flavor and visual appeal.

Conclusion:

In conclusion, this hot spiced tea mix is a delicious and versatile beverage that can be enjoyed hot or iced, with or without milk. It's a great way to warm up on a cold day or to enjoy a refreshing drink on a hot afternoon. By following these simple tips, you can create a delicious and flavorful tea mix that you and your family will love. Experiment with different combinations of spices to find your perfect blend.
