HUNGARIAN GOULASH I

Hungarian Goulash I image

A spicy way to dress up stew beef. My mom made this when we were kids, and we loved it. It is spicy while not mouth-burning! Can be made with cheaper cuts of beef, and comes out very tender. If it gets too thick, add a little water while it's cooking. Garnish with sour cream.

This is so simple to make but tastes so good! My mom made this for us when we were younger and still a favorite of mine. Smoked sausage could also be used but I prefer the hot dogs. Serve this over mashed potatoes for total comfort food.

HUNGARIAN CONEY ISLAND HOT DOG SAUCE

Hungarian Coney Island Hot Dog Sauce image

This recipe uses paprika instead of chili powder as the base seasoning, and gives the sauce a distinct Hungarian goulash taste. As with all sauces, this one will be even tastier if refrigerated and then reheated and served the next day.

Time 2h45m

Yield 10-12 serving(s)

Number Of Ingredients 13

2 lbs lean ground beef
1 large vidalia onion, finely chopped
4 garlic cloves, finely chopped
1 hot hungarian pepper, finely chopped
1/2 teaspoon marjoram
1/2 teaspoon thyme
15 ounces tomato puree
2 tablespoons sweet paprika
2 tablespoons white wine vinegar
1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
1 teaspoon prepared mustard
water
salt

Steps:

  • Sauté ground beef, stirring frequently to break the meat into small pieces, until brown. Remove from heat and drain grease.
  • Sauté chopped onion, garlic and Hungarian pepper until tender. Add ground beef, marjoram and thyme. Stir to mix ingredients evenly throughout.
  • Slowly add the tomato puree. Add paprika and again stir the mixture. Add vinegar, Worcestershire sauce and mustard. Add water to thin to preferred texture; not more than 8 oz. should be sufficient.
  • Simmer sauce on low heat in a covered pot for about two hours. Allow sauce to cool and salt to taste. Hungarian peppers are the mildest of the hot peppers, and if you desire more heat, add Tabasco or your favorite hot sauce to taste, then reheat for about ½ hour.
  • Serve over hot dogs on buns. Offer chopped Vidalia onion, and for an additional Hungarian touch, add a dab of sour cream on top of the hot dog.

Tips:

  • Choose high-quality sausages: Use the best quality sausages you can find, as this will make a big difference to the overall taste of your hot dog.
  • Grill or pan-fry your sausages: This is the best way to cook hot dogs, as it gives them a nice smoky flavor. If you are grilling, cook the sausages over medium heat for about 10 minutes, or until they are cooked through. If you are pan-frying, heat a little oil in a skillet over medium heat and cook the sausages for about 5 minutes per side, or until they are cooked through.
  • Use fresh toppings: Fresh toppings will give your hot dog the best flavor. Some popular toppings include sauerkraut, onions, relish, and mustard. You can also get creative and try out different toppings, such as avocado, bacon, or cheese.
  • Don't overload your hot dog: Too many toppings can make your hot dog messy and difficult to eat. Stick to a few of your favorite toppings so that you can enjoy the flavor of the sausage and the bun.
  • Serve your hot dogs immediately: Hot dogs are best enjoyed when they are fresh off the grill or out of the pan. Serve them immediately with your favorite toppings.
