ASIAN STYLE MEATLOAF

This is the most moist, fabulous tasting meatloaf--everyone loves it! The Hoisin sauce is available in the Oriental Food Section of the grocery store... it is like cross between soy and ketchup, and makes a wonderful glaze for this moist meatloaf. We love this dish. Very moist. Serve with rice and steamed broccoli. A wonderful dinner. Leftovers make great sandwiches.

JAPANESE-STYLE MEATLOAF

Japanese-Style Meatloaf image

I adapted this from a korokke recipe I frequently use. Korokke is a Japanese fried croquette made with seasoned ground meat and mashed potato. I combined the seasoning used there with a standard meatloaf recipe to create this fun hybrid. I serve it with mashed potatoes and a spicy barbeque sauce.

Time 1h25m

Yield 8 serving(s)

Number Of Ingredients 11

1 1/2 lbs ground beef
1/2 lb ground pork
3 slices bread, broken up into small pieces
2 eggs, lightly beaten
1 small onion, finely chopped
2 stalks celery, finely chopped
3 tablespoons soy sauce
1 tablespoon minced fresh ginger
2 tablespoons hoisin sauce
1/2 cup hoisin sauce
2 tablespoons ketchup

Steps:

  • Preheat oven to 350 degrees In a large bowl mix together the beef, pork, bread crumbs, eggs, onion, and celery.
  • Season with 3 tbsp soy sauce, ginger, and 2 tbsp hoisin sauce.
  • Pat mixture into a shallow 2 quart baking pan.
  • Bake in preheated oven for 40 minutes.
  • Drain grease from pan.
  • In a small bowl mix 1/2 cup hoisin with 2 tbsp ketchup.
  • Spread over top of meatloaf.
  • Continue baking for 20 minutes.
  • Remove from oven and let rest for 5 minutes.

Tips:

  • Choose the right ground meat: A mixture of ground beef and ground pork is ideal for this recipe, as it provides a balance of flavor and texture. You can also use all beef or all pork, but the texture will be slightly different.
  • Use fresh, high-quality ingredients: The better the ingredients you use, the better your meatloaf will taste. Look for fresh, lean ground meat, and use fresh vegetables and herbs.
  • Don't overmix the meatloaf mixture: Overmixing can make the meatloaf tough. Mix the ingredients just until they are combined.
  • Shape the meatloaf into a loaf shape: This will help it cook evenly. You can also use a muffin tin to make individual meatloaves.
  • Bake the meatloaf at a moderate temperature: This will help prevent the meatloaf from drying out. The ideal internal temperature for meatloaf is 160 degrees Fahrenheit.
  • Let the meatloaf rest before slicing: This will help the juices redistribute throughout the meatloaf, making it more moist and flavorful.

Conclusion:

Japanese-style meatloaf is a delicious and versatile dish that can be enjoyed by people of all ages. It is a great way to use up leftover rice, and it is also a good source of protein and vegetables. Serve it with your favorite sides, such as mashed potatoes, roasted vegetables, or a salad.
