GRANDMA'S CRANBERRY SAUCE

Grandma's Cranberry Sauce image

This is the only cranberry sauce that I have found that I like. It is my grandmother's recipe. This is the original recipe. I am going to modify this year to do whole berries and just pare the apples ahead of time.

Provided by SweetsLady

Categories     Sauces

Time 50m

Yield 8 serving(s)

Number Of Ingredients 4

3 medium apples (I use granny smith)
1 lb cranberries, washed and picked over
1 1/2 cups water
3 cups sugar (my grandma's original recipe but I have cut mine down to 2 cups)

Steps:

  • Cut up 3 medium apples with peeling. Put in kettle with cranberries and water.
  • Boil until skins pop.
  • Push cranberries through fine sieve into bowl to capture the skins of cranberries and apples.
  • Add sugar to bowl and then put back to boil. Cook for 5 minutes. Pour into bowl.
  • Let Cool before putting saran wrap on and putting in fridge.

Tips:

  • Use fresh cranberries. Fresh cranberries have a brighter flavor than frozen cranberries, and they hold their shape better when cooked.
  • Don't overcook the sauce. Cranberry sauce should be cooked until the cranberries have burst, but not so long that they become mushy.
  • Add sugar to taste. The amount of sugar you add to your cranberry sauce will depend on your personal preference. Start with a small amount and add more to taste.
  • Use a variety of spices. Cranberry sauce can be flavored with a variety of spices, such as cinnamon, nutmeg, ginger, and cloves.
  • Get creative with your ingredients. You can add other ingredients to your cranberry sauce, such as orange zest, lemon juice, or chopped nuts.

Conclusion:

Cranberry sauce is a versatile condiment that can be enjoyed with a variety of dishes. Whether you're serving it with turkey, chicken, or pork, or using it as a topping for desserts, cranberry sauce is sure to please. So next time you're looking for a delicious and easy-to-make side dish, give one of these cranberry sauce recipes a try.
