Dough:
3 c flour
1 c butter flavored Crisco
1/2 c warm water (not hot)
1/8 t vanilla
1/4 oz packet of yeast
1 T sugar
3/8" dowl rod, 5-6" lengths
paper bag cut to fit baking sheet
Filling:
1 c milk
5 T flour
1 c sugar
1 c vegetable shortening
1 t vanilla

Steps:

  • Cut Crisco into flour until it gets crumbly. Add the remaining ingredients and mix at low speed. Roll the dough to no more than 1/4" thick on a floured board and cut into 1x4" strips. Wrap the strips of dough around foil wrapped dowel rods, slightly overlapping the edges. Let the cookies rise for 30 minutes on the cookie sheet, then bake at 350 for 15 minutes until slightly darkened. To remove shells from rods hold one end with tongs and slide the shell off. Let cool. Filling: In a small saucepan over low to medium heat, cook milk and flour until the mixture is thick, stirring constantly. Set aside to cool. Beat shortening, sugar and vanilla until fluffy. Add the cooled milk mixture and continue beating until well blended and fluffy. Fill the shells with a pastry bag. Dust the cookies with powdered sugar. Shortcut: Use Pepperidge Farms frozen pastry dough. Thaw and lay out on a floured surface and cut into strips.

Number Of Ingredients 8

1 package Pepperidge Farm Frozen Puff Pastry
1 egg and 1 TBSP water, mixed together
Filling
You can fill these with anything -- chocolate cream, whipped cream, etc. -- but we prefer the traditional filling.
2 cups Crisco
1 stick of butter
2 tsp vanilla
6 cups powdered sugar

Steps:

  • Thaw pastry. Cut into length wise strips using a pastry wheel. Wrap each strip of dough around a well greased cream horn mold. Place the molds on a parchment lined baking sheet about three inches apart. Brush dough with egg and water mixture. Bake at 350 degrees for 20 minutes, or until brown. Beat Crisco, butter and vanilla until smooth, then add powdered sugar Pipe into horns Dust with powdered sugar

Tips:

  • Mise en Place: Before you start cooking, make sure you have all your ingredients and equipment ready. This will help you stay organized and avoid scrambling around in the middle of the cooking process.
  • Measure Accurately: Accurate measurements are essential for successful baking. Use a kitchen scale to measure ingredients whenever possible, as this is the most precise method. If you don't have a kitchen scale, use measuring cups that have been leveled off with a knife.
  • Follow the Recipe Carefully: Especially when you're first starting out, it's important to follow the recipe closely. Once you have more experience, you can start to experiment with different ingredients and techniques.
  • Pay Attention to the Oven Temperature: The oven temperature is crucial for baking. Make sure your oven is preheated to the correct temperature before you start baking. Using an oven thermometer to ensure that your oven is at the correct temperature is also a good idea.
  • Don't Overmix: Overmixing can result in tough, dry baked goods. Mix your ingredients until they are just combined, then stop. For cookies or muffins, overmixing the batter can cause the gluten in the flour to develop too much, resulting in a tough texture.
  • Let Baked Goods Cool Completely: Before you frost or decorate your baked goods, let them cool completely. This will help prevent the frosting from melting or the decorations from sliding off.

Conclusion:

Baking can be a fun and rewarding experience. With a little practice, you can master the basics and start creating delicious baked goods that your family and friends will love. Remember to be patient, follow the recipes carefully, and don't be afraid to experiment. With time and practice, you'll be baking like a pro in no time!
