GRANDMA'S RUSSIAN TEA

Grandma's Russian Tea image

I grew up drinking this tea at my grandmother's house. I now fix it at my house on really cold days, when I am sick (lots of vitamin C!), and at Christmas. It is perfect to let simmer on the stove to make the house smell good and to serve to guests. I have no idea why its called 'Russian' tea; that is just what my grandmother always called it. Use any tea you like. I've used regular black tea, decaf, and cinnamon spice, and it's all great. If using spiced tea, you may want to adjust the amount of cinnamon, cloves, and allspice. This is also great reheated!

Tips:

  • Choose high-quality tea leaves: The quality of your tea leaves will greatly impact the flavor of your tea. Look for loose-leaf teas from reputable brands, and avoid using tea bags, which often contain lower-quality tea dust.
  • Use fresh, cold water: Always use fresh, cold water to brew your tea. Using hot or boiling water can extract bitterness from the tea leaves. Cold water will help to bring out the tea's natural flavors.
  • Steep your tea for the proper amount of time: The steeping time will vary depending on the type of tea you are brewing. Generally, black teas should be steeped for 3-5 minutes, green teas for 2-3 minutes, and white teas for 1-2 minutes.
  • Use the correct water-to-tea ratio: The amount of tea leaves you use will depend on the strength of tea you desire. A general rule of thumb is to use 1 teaspoon of tea leaves for every 8 ounces of water.
  • Add milk, sugar, or honey to taste: Once your tea is brewed, you can add milk, sugar, or honey to taste. However, be careful not to overdo it, as too much sweetener can mask the tea's natural flavors.

Conclusion:

Mama's Old Fashioned Russian Tea is a delicious and refreshing beverage that can be enjoyed hot or cold. It is perfect for a quick pick-me-up or to relax with at the end of the day. This timeless recipe is a great way to experience the rich tea culture of Russia. With its simple ingredients and easy-to-follow instructions, this tea is sure to become a favorite in your home.
