MANHATTAN WITH AMARO AND COCOA

Manhattan With Amaro and Cocoa image

A mixture of rye whiskey and amaro, with the addition of bitters, sets this simply made cocktail on the road to a manhattan. But then there are detours: the chocolate liqueur to add a mellow accent, and the cardamom for a hint of spice. I also tried substituting coffee liqueur for the chocolate, with great success. It is from the 18th Room in New York, where it is called Before Night Falls.

CHOCOLATE MANHATTAN

Categories     beverage

Time 5m

Yield 1 drink

Number Of Ingredients 6

1 teaspoon honey
1 teaspoon cocoa powder
2 ounces bourbon, such as Woodford Reserve
1 ounces sweet vermouth, such as Carpano Antica Formula
4 dashes chocolate bitters, such as Fee Brothers Aztec Chocolate Bitters
1 small slice fresh red chile

Steps:

  • Put the honey and cocoa powder on separate small plates. Prepare a glass by dipping half of the rim into the honey (take care to wipe off the excess), then the same half of the glass into the cocoa powder. Set aside.
  • Add the bourbon, vermouth, bitters and chile slice to a mixing glass and lightly muddle the chile to extract just a little heat. Add ice and stir the cocktail thoroughly. Using a julep strainer, slowly strain into the prepared glass, taking care not to aerate the liquid.

Tips:

  • Choose the right amaro. For a classic Manhattan, use a sweet vermouth like Carpano Antica or Cocchi Vermouth di Torino. For a more bitter Manhattan, use a dry vermouth like Dolin Dry or Noilly Prat Extra Dry.
  • Don't be afraid to experiment with different types of cocoa. Unsweetened cocoa powder is a good place to start, but you can also try using Dutch-process cocoa powder or even chocolate syrup.
  • Garnish your Manhattan with a twist of orange peel or a maraschino cherry. This will add a pop of color and flavor to your drink.
  • Serve your Manhattan chilled. The best way to do this is to shake it with ice and then strain it into a chilled glass.

Conclusion:

The Manhattan is a classic cocktail that is perfect for any occasion. It is simple to make and can be customized to your own taste. So next time you're looking for a delicious and sophisticated drink, give the Manhattan a try.
