- Add flour and milk mixture alternately, ending with flour. Add flavorings, chopped nuts and the maraschino cherries.
- Pour batter into a greased and floured tube pan. Place cake in a cold oven. Bake at 325 degrees until done-.
- Remove cake from pan while still warm. Ice as desired.
- Note: The flavoring might be a bit difficult to find, but can be ordered online from the Superior Prod. Co. Charlotte N.C. as llangrove's review of Aug. 17th 2010 states. (Thank you llangrove for that information!).
Tips:
- Use fresh or frozen cherries: Thaw frozen cherries before using.
- Pit the cherries: Use a cherry pitter or a sharp knife to remove the pits from the cherries.
- Marinate the cherries: Marinating the cherries in sugar and lemon juice helps to enhance their flavor.
- Use a rich pound cake batter: A good pound cake batter should be thick and creamy, with a high ratio of butter to flour.
- Add the cherries to the batter just before baking: This will prevent the cherries from sinking to the bottom of the cake.
- Bake the cake until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean: This usually takes about 60-70 minutes.
- Let the cake cool completely before serving: This will help the cake to set and hold its shape.
