RED CHRISTMAS PUNCH (HOT MULLED CIDER)

Red Christmas Punch (hot mulled cider) image

We make this every Christmas, and it's a favorite with friends and family. Sometimes I vary the juices - you can use cranberry instead of cherry, or cranapple juice instead of apple cider.

Time 25m

Number Of Ingredients 5

2 qt apple cider
1 qt cherry cider or juice
2 juice oranges
4 cinnamon sticks
1 tsp whole cloves

Steps:

  • 1. Mix together the ciders/juices in a large kettle over medium heat.
  • 2. Peel the zest off one orange in large strips. Place zest, cinnamon sticks, and cloves in a double square of cheesecloth, and tie tightly. Place spice bag into the cider mixture.
  • 3. Heat the cider to serving temperature - like hot coffee or tea (do not boil). Barely simmer the punch for about 15 minutes.
  • 4. Juice the orange and add the juice to the cider. Halve and slice the remaining orange and float the slices on top of the hot punch. Serve hot with an orange slice and cinnamon stick if desired.

Tips:

  • Use a good quality, unpasteurized cider. Pasteurization can kill off some of the beneficial bacteria and enzymes that contribute to the cider's flavor and health benefits.
  • Choose spices that you enjoy. Common spices used in mulled cider include cinnamon, cloves, nutmeg, and ginger. However, you can also use other spices, such as cardamom, star anise, or allspice.
  • Don't overheat the cider. Heating the cider too high can cause it to lose its flavor and nutritional value. Aim to heat the cider to just below a simmer, around 180 degrees Fahrenheit.
  • Let the cider steep for a while. Allowing the cider to steep for a period of time allows the spices to infuse their flavor into the cider. The longer you steep the cider, the more flavorful it will be.
  • Serve the cider warm. Mulled cider is best enjoyed warm. You can serve it in mugs or glasses, and you can garnish it with a cinnamon stick or a slice of orange.

Conclusion:

Mulled cider is a delicious and festive drink that is perfect for enjoying during the holiday season. It is easy to make and can be customized to your own taste. Whether you like your cider sweet, spicy, or tart, there is a recipe out there for you. So next time you're looking for a warm and comforting drink, give mulled cider a try. You won't be disappointed!
