SWEET, SPICY AND TANGY BAKED HAM

Sweet, Spicy and Tangy Baked Ham image

I love baked ham or even ham steaks, but dislike the premade glazes. And definitely not fond of the cloves or traditional brown sugar glaze which is so often used. So this is a quick mix of sweet, a little tang and spice. Now as far as the ham goes ... use your favorite. A good spiral cut, or store bought bone in or boneless ham or even just steaks. This can be used or any cut of ham.

Time 10m

Yield 1 serving(s)

Number Of Ingredients 8

1 ham
1/2 cup honey
3/4 cup currant jelly
4 tablespoons Dijon mustard
1/2 teaspoon ground ginger
1/4 teaspoon red pepper flakes
1 teaspoon dried thyme
4 tablespoons Dijon mustard

Steps:

  • Glaze -- Mix all together and just heat on medium in a small pot on the stove just to combine all the ingredients.
  • Bakings -- As the ham bakes, just brush on the glaze. If making ham steaks, just brush on as you pan fry them. If baking the ham, I like to brush fairly often to get a nice glaze.
  • That easy, but it is a nice change from the typical glazes.

SPICY MUSTARD HAM GLAZE (NOT SWEET AT ALL)

Spicy Mustard Ham Glaze (Not Sweet at All) image

I couldn't find a true savory ham glaze, so I made up my own. It turned out so well, I just had to share! I bought a large ham (bone-in of course!) that I wanted to use the left overs, for other yummies later in the week. I don't necessarily like the sweet ham glazes, as it seems to linger with the leftovers. This will be great in scalloped ham and potatoes, ham and beans, omlets, sandwiches.. you name it! Hope you enjoy!! :)

Yield 15 serving(s)

Number Of Ingredients 7

2 tablespoons spicy brown mustard
2 teaspoons Worcestershire sauce (or my original thought was liquid smoke, but then learned I didn't have any)
2 teaspoons ground cumin
2 teaspoons fresh ground black pepper
1 1/2 teaspoons garlic powder
1 1/2 teaspoons mustard powder
8 1/2 lbs bone-in ham

Steps:

  • 1. In a small bowl, wisk all ingredients together.
  • 2. Pat ham dry with papertowel.
  • 3. Schmear all over ham.
  • I put mine in the slow cooker for 8 hours on low, or you could bake, roast, smoke, or grill the ham, depending on your preference. You could also marinate the ham before cooking, but I just didn't think about this until the morning of.
  • I made a double batch of this to use as a dipping sauce as well. Delish!

Tips:

  • Choose the right ham: Opt for a fully cooked ham with a bone-in for the best flavor and texture.
  • Score the ham properly: Use a sharp knife to score the ham's surface in a diamond pattern, making sure to cut through the fat but not into the meat.
  • Enhance the flavor: Stud the scored ham with cloves, garlic cloves, and pineapple chunks for a burst of flavor.
  • Prepare the glaze: Combine brown sugar, Dijon mustard, honey, and spices to create a delicious glaze that will caramelize during baking.
  • Bake at the right temperature: Preheat the oven to 325°F (163°C) and bake the ham covered for 1 hour per pound (450g). Remove the foil and glaze the ham every 15-20 minutes for the last 30 minutes of baking.
  • Let the ham rest: Once the ham is cooked, let it rest for 15-20 minutes before slicing and serving. This allows the juices to redistribute, resulting in a more tender and flavorful ham.

Conclusion:

With these tips and tricks, you can elevate your baked ham game and impress your family and guests with a delectable dish. Remember to choose a quality ham, score it properly, enhance the flavor with herbs and spices, and glaze it to perfection. The combination of sweet and savory flavors, along with the tender, juicy texture, will make this baked ham a hit at any gathering. So, fire up your oven and get ready to indulge in a culinary delight that is sure to become a family favorite.
