OLD-FASHION OATMEAL PIE

Old-Fashion Oatmeal Pie image

This great pie recipe goes back over 100 years. The recipe came from my grandmother's grandmother who was living in Charleston, South Carolina during the 1860's. Family history has it, that during the Civil War, since pecans were in short supply in the South, oatmeal was substituted for the traditional pecan pie and the results were astonishing. Now served at every family gathering since that time.

Tips:

  • Use Old-Fashioned Oats: For a more traditional flavor and texture, use old-fashioned oats instead of quick oats or instant oats.
  • Don't Overmix the Batter: To prevent a tough crust, mix the batter just until the ingredients are combined. Overmixing will develop the gluten in the flour, resulting in a tough crust.
  • Bake the Pie Until the Filling is Set: The pie is done baking when the filling is set and no longer jiggles when the pie plate is shaken gently.
  • Let the Pie Cool Before Serving: Allow the pie to cool for at least 1 hour before serving. This will allow the filling to set and the flavors to develop.
  • Serve with Vanilla Ice Cream or Whipped Cream: Oatmeal pie is traditionally served with vanilla ice cream or whipped cream. These toppings add a delicious creaminess and sweetness to the pie.

Conclusion:

Oatmeal pie is a classic comfort food that is easy to make and loved by people of all ages. With its creamy, flavorful filling and flaky crust, it's the perfect dessert for any occasion. Whether you're looking for a nostalgic treat or a new favorite dessert, oatmeal pie is sure to please. So, preheat your oven and get ready to bake this delicious and comforting dessert!
