FROZEN BRANDY OLD-FASHIONEDS
Both sides of my family are Midwestern, so our strong brandy tradition is evident in the slush we make for the holidays and in the Wisconsin old-fashioned cocktails we enjoy year-round. I decided to combine those recipes into something completely new. This goes very quickly at gatherings! -Stephanie Vaughan, Madison, Wisconsin

SWEET VERMOUTH SLUSH
Spoon and serve this vermouth-orange slush as is for a lower-A.B.V. drink or top each portion, affogato-style, with a drinker's choice floater of hard spirit. Tequila, gin, brandy, bourbon or mezcal all work well. The key to prolonging the cocktail's icy texture is to make sure every element is chilled: Pop whatever liquors you plan to pour over top into the fridge when you put the slush in the freezer. This simple, plan-ahead move will keep your final drink from melting too fast.

Steps:
- In a shallow 9-by-9-inch baking pan, combine the orange juice, vermouth, simple syrup, orange liqueur and filtered water. Whisk to combine, then place in the freezer, uncovered, for 3 hours.
- After 3 hours, use a fork to scrape the frozen edges of the mixture toward the center, then continue freezing until the mixture is nearly set, at least 5 hours or overnight.
- Once frozen, use a fork to scrape into a fine, granitalike texture. If you are not serving immediately, transfer the vermouth slush to a covered container and freeze until ready to use.
- To serve, add 3/4 cup/6 ounces of the slush to a lowball glass and top with 3/4 to 1 ounce of your preferred liquor; serve immediately.

- Stir in 6 cups water, bourbon, lemonade and orange juice concentrates.
- Cover and freeze at least 8 hours.
- To serve, spoon 1/2 cup mixture into each glass, add 1/2 cup soda then garnish.
Tips:
- Chill ingredients and equipment: Chilling all ingredients and equipment, including glasses, before making the slush helps to create a colder, more refreshing drink.
- Use fresh fruit: Fresh fruit adds natural sweetness, flavor, and color to the slush. Frozen fruit can also be used, but fresh fruit will result in a better-tasting slush.>
- Adjust sweetness: The amount of sugar or simple syrup can be adjusted to taste. Start with a small amount and add more to taste.
- Blend until smooth: Blend the slush until it is smooth and no chunks of ice remain. This will result in a more enjoyable drinking experience.
- Serve immediately: Slush is best served immediately after it is made. It will start to melt quickly, so don't let it sit for too long before serving.
Conclusion:
Old-fashioned slush is a refreshing and delicious summer treat that can be enjoyed by people of all ages. With a few simple ingredients and a blender, you can easily make a slush at home. Experiment with different flavors and enjoy this classic summertime drink all season long.
