OLD FASHIONED APPLESAUCE SPICE CAKE
I found this recipe on a Duncan Hines spice cake mix box. It was easy to make. It was not too sweet, but sweet enough! I used chunky applesauce & I did not frost the cake -- I just sprinkled it with cinnamon sugar, but the frosting sounds good too.

OLD-FASHIONED SPICE CAKE
This is a wonderful cake recipe that came on the back of, I believe, a Gold Medal flour package. In the 1980's my younger sister won prizes with Girl Scouts in several baking competitions. The caramel frosting is the best touch!

Some Recipe Recommendations and Concluding Remarks
Recommendations
- For a smoother batter, use a sifter to remove any large sugar crystals before adding it to your mixture. This will also help to evenly distribute the spices throughout the cake.
- If you don't have buttermilk, you can make your own by adding 1 tablespoon of vinegar or 1 tablespoon of milk per cup to regular milk and allowing it to stand for 10 minutes before using it in your recipe.
- If you don't have whole cloves, you can use ground cloves. Use 1/2 the amount of ground cloves as you would whole cloves.
- Feel free to experiment with different spices. You could try adding a pinch of nutmeg, ginger, or cardamom to the mix.
- Serve your cake warm with a dollop of whipped cream or a scoop of vanilla ice cream.
