SPICY CITRUS REFRESHER

Spicy Citrus Refresher image

This big batch of jalapeño-spiced orange-lime juice keeps in the fridge for a couple of days. Pour it over ice and top it with seltzer for a refreshing alcohol-free pick-me-up, or stir a splash of rum into your serving for a cocktail.

Provided by Anna Stockwell

Categories     Bon Appétit     Drink     Cocktail     Non-Alcoholic     Orange     Orange Juice     Lime     Lime Juice     Citrus     Jalapeño     Rum     Vegan     Vegetarian     Wheat/Gluten-Free     Soy Free     Peanut Free     Tree Nut Free     Dairy Free

Yield 10-12 servings

Number Of Ingredients 6

4 limes
7 navel oranges, divided
2 small jalapeños, divided
1 cup sugar
½ tsp. kosher salt
Club soda (for serving)

Steps:

  • Juice limes and 6 oranges into a large pitcher. (You should have about ¾ cup lime juice and 1¼ cups orange juice.) Discard lime rinds and half of the orange rinds. Cut remaining orange rinds into quarters and place in a large saucepan.
  • Coarsely chop 1 jalapeño and add to orange rinds along with sugar and salt. Using a muddler or dowel-style rolling pin, muddle rinds until thoroughly smooshed and much of the sugar and salt is dissolved, about 3 minutes. Stir in 1 cup warm water and let sit at least 10 minutes and up to 1 hour.
  • Strain orange mixture through a fine-mesh sieve into pitcher with juice, gently pressing with a spoon to extract as much liquid as possible; discard solids. Thinly slice remaining orange and add to pitcher. Remove seeds from remaining jalapeño; thinly slice into rounds and add to pitcher.
  • To serve, pour 2 oz. juice mixture into an ice-filled glass. Top off with club soda; stir to combine.
  • Do Ahead: Juice mixture can be made 2 days ahead. Cover and chill.

Tips:

  • Choose high-quality oranges: The freshness and quality of the oranges used greatly impact the taste of your spritzer. Opt for ripe, juicy oranges that are free of blemishes.
  • Adjust the sweetness to your preference: The amount of simple syrup or honey you add to your spritzer is entirely up to your taste. If you prefer a sweeter drink, add more; if you like it tangy, use less or none at all.
  • Experiment with different carbonated water options: You can use plain sparkling water or flavored sparkling water to make your spritzer. Try different flavors like lemon-lime, grapefruit, or ginger to create unique variations.
  • Add some herbs or spices for an extra kick: If you're looking for a more complex flavor profile, consider adding some fresh herbs like mint or basil, or a pinch of spices like cinnamon or nutmeg to your spritzer.
  • Serve your spritzer chilled: For the most refreshing experience, chill your spritzer before serving. You can also add ice cubes to keep it cold longer.

Conclusion:

The orange juice spritzer is a versatile and refreshing beverage that can be enjoyed at any time of the day. With its vibrant citrus flavor and bubbly effervescence, it's a perfect drink to quench your thirst and brighten up your day. Whether you prefer a classic recipe or enjoy experimenting with different flavors and ingredients, the orange juice spritzer is a delightful treat that's sure to please everyone. So next time you're looking for a refreshing and flavorful drink, give this easy and delicious recipe a try.
