BUTTER LETTUCE WITH ORANGE MUSCAT CHAMPAGNE VINAIGRETTE

Butter Lettuce With Orange Muscat Champagne Vinaigrette image

This simple recipe (with a few of my own embellishments) is printed on the side label of a bottle of Orange Muscat Champagne Vinegar from Trader Joes. I think a scattering of toasted pepitas would be extra nice. Posting the recipe for all those JoeHeads out there...you know who you are!

Provided by COOKGIRl

Categories     Vegan

Time 15m

Yield 3-4 serving(s)

Number Of Ingredients 11

1 head butter lettuce
1 avocado, peeled, pitted and thinly sliced
1 cup jicama, cut into matchsticks
1 orange, peeled and segmented (I used Valencia)
1/4 cup red onion, diced small
2 tablespoons orange muscat champagne vinaigrette
1 tablespoon extra virgin olive oil (add more if you want-I like my vinaigrette on the lighter side usually)
salt and pepper, to taste
1 teaspoon stone ground mustard (my addition for a bit more zing)
fresh apple mint leaf (or pineapple)
2 tablespoons toasted pepitas (optional)

Steps:

  • Please note that all ingredient amounts are estimated.
  • Prepare the vinaigrette and set aside. Best prepared 1 hour in advance.
  • Gently toss the butter lettuce, avocado, jicama, orange segments, red onion and vinaigrette together in a large bowl.
  • Divide and arrange on 4 salad plates.
  • Garnish each serving with apple mint leaves and pepitas.
  • Pass the dressing.

Tips:

  • Choose ripe and juicy oranges: The quality of the oranges used in the vinaigrette greatly impacts the final taste. Select oranges that are heavy for their size and have a vibrant color.
  • Use a good quality muscatel vinegar: Muscatel vinegar is a key ingredient in this vinaigrette, so it's important to choose a high-quality variety. Look for a vinegar that is made from 100% muscat grapes and has a rich, fruity flavor.
  • Adjust the sweetness: The amount of honey or sugar in the vinaigrette can be adjusted to taste. If you prefer a sweeter vinaigrette, add more honey or sugar. If you prefer a more tart vinaigrette, use less.
  • Emulsify the vinaigrette properly: To ensure a smooth and well-blended vinaigrette, whisk the ingredients together vigorously or use a blender or food processor.
  • Let the vinaigrette rest: Allowing the vinaigrette to rest for a few minutes before using allows the flavors to meld together and develop. This step is especially important if you are using fresh herbs in the vinaigrette.

Conclusion:

With its bright citrus flavor and delicate floral notes, orange muscatel vinaigrette is a versatile dressing that can elevate a wide range of dishes. Whether you use it to dress a salad, marinate chicken or fish, or drizzle over roasted vegetables, this vinaigrette is sure to add a touch of sophistication and flavor. Experiment with different types of oranges and muscatel vinegars to create a vinaigrette that perfectly suits your taste preferences.
