LA PALOMA COOLER

La Paloma Cooler image

Less expected than a margarita but just as easy to make, our La Paloma cooler is lively and laid-back at the same time. It gets its light, bubbly flavor from Mexican soda (which is also great on its own) and a platinum tequila. The "drunken lime" floater is a cored-out half lime filled with a shot of reposado tequila.

PALOMA COOLER

On a family trip to Guadalajara, Mexico a few years back we often had a drink called a "Rusa", which I found out later is also known as a Paloma. We've been enjoying these for years now. They're easier to make than Margaritas but just as tasty and refreshing. We don't really use a recipe, but I found this one from Martha Stewart. We don't do the "drunken lime" floater, but it sounds like a fun idea. Enjoy!

Time 5m

Yield 1 10 oz. drink, 1 serving(s)

Number Of Ingredients 6

1 teaspoon lime juice
1 ounce platinum tequila
1 (13 1/2 ounce) bottle mexican grapefruit soda (can use Squirt soda instead)
1 lime wedge, for garnish
ice
coarse salt, for rim (I like to add a pinch of salt to the drink itself, along with the lime juice)

Steps:

  • Rub rim of a highball glass with lime wedge; invert glass in a small dish of coarse salt, twisting to coat rim.
  • Fill glass halfway with ice, 1 teaspoon lime juice, and 1 ounce platinum tequila, then top with Mexican grapefruit soda.
  • Stir.
  • Place cored-out lime half in drink and fill with tequila (try a reposado for added flavor).

Tips:

  • Choose the right tequila. A good Paloma cooler starts with a good tequila. Look for a blanco or reposado tequila that is 100% agave.
  • Use fresh grapefruit juice. Fresh grapefruit juice is essential for a refreshing Paloma cooler. If you can't find fresh grapefruit juice, you can use bottled grapefruit juice, but make sure it's 100% juice and not from concentrate.
  • Add a splash of lime juice. Lime juice adds a bit of tartness and brightness to the Paloma cooler.
  • Use a good quality soda water. The soda water is what gives the Paloma cooler its fizz. Make sure to use a good quality soda water that is not flat.
  • Serve the Paloma cooler with a lime wedge. A lime wedge adds a finishing touch to the Paloma cooler and makes it even more refreshing.

Conclusion:

The Paloma cooler is a delicious and refreshing cocktail that is perfect for any occasion. It's easy to make and can be customized to your own taste. So next time you're looking for a refreshing cocktail, give the Paloma cooler a try. You won't be disappointed!
