SPICY BAKED BEANS

Spicy Baked Beans image

Tangy and sweet old-fashioned baked beans with a little jalapeno. They're easy to make and great at a BBQ, hamburger night, a picnic, etc. My husband's favorite semi-homemade recipe. Says the sweetness and fire create a super depth of flavor. It's not strong enough to overwhelm the sweet home-style of baked beans.

SPICY BAKED BEANS

Spicy Baked Beans image

My spin on a Jimmy Dean bakeoff winner 2005. In my picture, I made 1/2 the recipe which makes plenty. I kept the full amount (1 lb) pork sausage, used chipotle powder for the red pepper and would cut back on the black pepper if you like it less spicy.

Categories     Pork

Time 1h5m

Yield 16-20 serving(s)

Number Of Ingredients 12

1 lb jimmy dean ground pork sausage

3 cups bottled barbecue sauce
1/4-1/2 cup firmly packed dark brown sugar (1/2 cup is on the sweet side)
1/4 cup yellow mustard
fresh lemon juice, 1 squirt (optional but very good)
1 teaspoon black pepper

Tips:

  • Use dried beans for the best flavor and texture. If using canned beans, rinse them thoroughly before using.
  • Soak the beans overnight before cooking to reduce the cooking time. If you don't have time to soak the beans, you can quick-soak them by boiling them for 2 minutes, then removing them from the heat and letting them sit for 1 hour.
  • Use a variety of beans for a more complex flavor. Some good options include pinto beans, black beans, and kidney beans.
  • Add some vegetables to the beans for extra nutrition and flavor. Some good options include onions, peppers, and celery.
  • Season the beans with your favorite spices. Some good options include chili powder, cumin, and garlic powder.
  • Bake the beans on low heat for several hours, or until they are tender and the sauce has thickened.
  • Serve the beans hot with your favorite sides, such as cornbread, rice, or salad.
