A wonderful custard type pie. The recipe was given to me by a friend when I had a bumper yield of pears from the tree in our yard. It's a favorite even when I have to buy the pears. To make prep time even faster I use a deep dish pie shell from the frozen food section.

PEAR PIE

Pear Pie image

A sour cream custard and streusel mixture form the topping for the pear pie. This pie won in a local baking competition.

Provided by Debbwl

Categories     Dessert

Time 45m

Yield 1 pie

Number Of Ingredients 11

9 inches unbaked pie shells
1 (2 lb) can pear halves, drained
1/3 cup sugar
1/8 teaspoon ginger
1 cup sour cream
1 egg
1/2 cup flour
1/4 cup brown sugar, packed
1/4 teaspoon cinnamon
1/4 cup butter
1/4 cup nuts, chopped (I use almonds or walnuts)

Steps:

  • Preheat oven to 400*F.
  • Arrange pear halves cut side up in pie shell.
  • Combine sugar, ginger, sour cream and egg; mix well.
  • Pour over pears.
  • **Streusel Topping**.
  • In small bowl, combine flour, brown sugar and cinnamon.
  • Cut in butter until crumbly.
  • Stir in nuts.
  • Sprinkle with Streusel Topping over pie.
  • Bake 25 to 30 minutes or until golden brown.
  • Cool.
  • Store in refrigerator.

Tips:

  • Use ripe pears: For the best flavor and texture, use ripe but not overripe pears. Overripe pears will be mushy and lack flavor.
  • Peel and core the pears: Before slicing the pears, peel and core them. This will help to remove any tough or bitter parts of the fruit.
  • Slice the pears thinly: Thinly sliced pears will cook more evenly and quickly than thick slices.
  • Use a variety of spices: To add flavor and depth to your pie, use a variety of spices such as cinnamon, nutmeg, and ginger. You can also add a pinch of salt to balance out the sweetness of the pears.
  • Don't overfill the pie crust: When filling the pie crust, be sure not to overfill it. Otherwise, the filling may spill over the sides of the pie when it bakes.
  • Bake the pie until the crust is golden brown and the filling is bubbling: The pie is done baking when the crust is golden brown and the filling is bubbling. This usually takes about 45-50 minutes.
  • Let the pie cool before serving: Once the pie is baked, let it cool for at least 15 minutes before serving. This will help the filling to set and the pie will be easier to slice.

Conclusion:

Pear pie is a classic dessert that is perfect for any occasion. It is easy to make and can be enjoyed by people of all ages. With its sweet and tangy filling, flaky crust, and warm spices, pear pie is a surefire hit. So next time you are looking for a delicious and easy dessert, give pear pie a try.
