I make this almost every week. My husband is EXTREMELY picky and he loves it. I took a recipe his mother used to make and made it better. Hope you enjoy. I never really measure. So I did my best at estimating the herbs.

KICKED-UP GOULASH

Kicked-Up Goulash image

This is no elementary school goulash, although it's as easy and a teen-pleaser. I created this recipe with what I had on hand, but the pearl onions and corn kick it up. It's hard to stop eating.

PICKY MIKE'S GOULASH

Picky Mike's Goulash image

Quick and easy to make. I especially like a goulash in the winter as an alternative to chili. My husband is a VERY PICKY eater, but he loves this dish. This goulash is best on the second day and is great with a salad and garlic bread.

Time 25m

Yield 4-6 serving(s)

Number Of Ingredients 8

1 lb ground turkey or 1 lb ground chicken, browned (I prefer lean turkey)
1/2 cup chopped onion, sauted with the meat
2 (15 ounce) cans mixed vegetables (OR 1 can cut greenbeans with juice and 1 can whole kernel corn with juice)
1 (15 ounce) can diced tomatoes (I prefer Hunt's with spices already in it for more flavor)
1 (15 ounce) can tomato sauce (I prefer Hunt's with spices already in it for more flavor)
1/2-3/4 cup small elbow macaroni (or dice 1 extra large potatoe or 2 medium potatoes instead of noodles)
3/4 cup water (I use one of the empty veg. cans)
salt and pepper (I prefer the grinder kind of sea salt and black pepper or mixed pepper)

Steps:

  • In a stew or dutch-oven pot, saute meat and chopped onions until brown.
  • Pour off any grease (I use lean turkey, so I don't have extra grease).
  • Add to browned meat& onions all of the remaining ingredients (the order doesn't matter).
  • Stir and bring to boil, then turn down to medium-low or simmer and put lid on pot.
  • Simmer 20 minutes or until noodles (or potatoes) are done.
  • Stir occasionally to keep from sticking to bottom of pot.

Tips:

  • Use high-quality ingredients. Fresh, flavorful ingredients will make a big difference in the taste of your goulash. Look for lean beef, ripe tomatoes, and flavorful paprika.
  • Brown the beef well. This will help to develop the flavor of the meat and prevent it from becoming tough.
  • Use a variety of vegetables. This will add flavor, texture, and nutrients to your goulash. Some good options include onions, carrots, celery, potatoes, and bell peppers.
  • Season the goulash well. Paprika is essential, but you can also add other spices like cumin, oregano, and garlic powder. Be sure to taste the goulash as you go and adjust the seasonings to your liking.
  • Simmer the goulash for at least 30 minutes. This will allow the flavors to meld and the beef to become tender.
  • Serve the goulash with a variety of toppings. Some popular options include sour cream, grated cheese, and chopped parsley.

Conclusion:

  • Goulash is a hearty, flavorful stew that is perfect for a cold winter day. It is also a very versatile dish that can be easily customized to your liking.
  • There are many different recipes for goulash, but the basic ingredients are always the same: beef, vegetables, and paprika.
  • You can use any type of beef for goulash, but chuck roast or stew meat are good options.
  • The vegetables that you use in your goulash are up to you, but some good options include onions, carrots, celery, potatoes, and bell peppers.
  • Paprika is the essential spice in goulash. Be sure to use a good quality paprika, and don't be afraid to add a lot of it.
  • Goulash is a stew that gets better with time, so don't be afraid to make a big batch and freeze some for later.
