"PITA THE GREAT" - TUNA SALAD

I found this recipe in the "Looney Spoons" cookbook and it has become a family favourite. There are a few more ingredients than your standard tuna salad but it is well worth the extra time. An equivalent amount of chopped, cooked chicken breast may be substituted for the tuna with equally delicious results. My 9 yo DD, especially, loves these, so I send the components in her school lunch and she assembles it when she's ready to eat. I hope you enjoy!

THE BEST TUNA SALAD

The Best Tuna Salad image

While we love many kinds of tuna salad, this classic version tops them all. The crispy celery and red onion give add zest and crunch, while mayonnaise and touch of mustard marry it all together. The lemon juice is optional as it's not traditional, but we strongly recommend it to brighten up the flavors of the final dish.

MIDDLE EASTERN TUNA SALAD PITAS

Middle Eastern Tuna Salad Pitas image

This isn't any old tuna salad sandwich. Filled with hummus (Middle Eastern chickpea dip), sesame oil, cumin and cilantro, this is a tuna salad like you've probably never had before. Pack it in pita pockets along with a slices of tomato and lettuce. I am not a cilantro fan, so I leave it out.

I had this in a restaurant once and it was so good I had to go home and recreate it. I have it with spinach stuffed in a pita or sandwich. I've cut back on the dressing to keep the calorie count low but adding more is yummy!

Tips:

  • Use high-quality tuna: Opt for solid white tuna packed in water or olive oil for the best flavor and texture.
  • Choose the right mayonnaise: Use a good-quality mayonnaise that you enjoy the taste of. Avoid low-fat or fat-free mayonnaise, as they can make the salad dry and bland.
  • Add some crunch: Celery, red onion, and cucumber are all great additions to tuna salad. They add flavor, texture, and color.
  • Use fresh herbs: Fresh herbs like dill, parsley, or chives can brighten up the flavor of tuna salad. Add them at the end of cooking to preserve their delicate flavor.
  • Don't overmix: Overmixing the tuna salad can make it mushy. Mix it just until the ingredients are combined.
  • Serve immediately or chill: Tuna salad can be served immediately or chilled for later. If you're chilling it, let it come to room temperature for about 30 minutes before serving.

Conclusion:

Tuna salad is a delicious and versatile dish that can be enjoyed in many different ways. Whether you're looking for a quick and easy lunch or a light and refreshing dinner, tuna salad is a great option. With a few simple ingredients and a little creativity, you can create a tuna salad that everyone will love.
